For my senior thesis research paper I explored social emotional learning and its effect on students. The purpose of this study is to explore how the pandemic has affected mental health and social emotional learning for stakeholders in an educational setting. These stakeholders will include students, teachers/staff, and parents. Research was conducted on the overarching question of how has the Covid-19 pandemic affected mental health amongst students. Some sub questions include What are the perspectives of all stakeholders about the social emotional impacts of learning, including academics and future success, during a pandemic? Another question is What are the perspectives of all stakeholders, and how does the school environment impact students and teachers during a pandemic? The design of my study was conducted on the guidelines of qualitative research while using living theory strategy of inquiry and narrative strategy of inquiry. These types of research methods conducted data using my own personal commonplace book from observing classes in an elementary school, and data from surveys done by teachers, school psychologists, college students on the addition tract, and a middle school student. Some major trends I found after evaluating my data collection and doing my own research was that socially students are extremely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic which also affects their academic performance and behavior. Social emotional health has suffered this past year due to virtual learning, social distancing, and many safety protocols.
