As human society and culture continue to develop, so does the knowledge and technology that follows with its goals being to further assist human advancement(s). Self-driving cars, robots, and artificial intelligence are just a few examples. As human society and culture evolve, so do knowledge and technology, both aiming to drive (and again) further advancements. However, the integration of AI raises a fundamental question for those in fields of education: should AI be used in schools?
The integration of AI in classrooms has become a highly debated topic in educational settings. Some teachers encourage the use of artificial intelligence in aiding students with their classwork or homework, while others strongly oppose its usage in classrooms. But why?
Many of those in fields of education view AI as a tool that could offer a leap in education and be beneficial to students. As AI adapts study materials to the levels of each student, it can help students who have difficulties catching up and learn at their own pace. AI can also provide extra help to those struggling with topics taught in the classroom. It is easily accessible (AI), being able to process and provide real-time feedback that allows students to identify their strengths and weaknesses. All of this could provide a great benefit to struggling students who may encounter difficulties in class.
While AI can be beneficial in areas of education, it also creates a threat for students who overuse or rely on AI entirely. Students may start to become overly reliant on AI to solve problems or complete tasks, reducing their ability or motivation to think critically and independently. The use of AI in education presents a slippery slope for students who choose to cheat and take the easy way out. By allowing students to submit work generated by AI, teachers risk enabling students to cheat and avoid developing critical thinking skills and ability to objectively analyze information. Over reliance on AI ultimately hinder students’ long-term educational development.
Although AI can be beneficial, over reliance on it can have significant consequences, particularly for people who abuse it. As educators, it is important to recognize the potential outcomes of using technology to ensure that it is used to better understand certain school subjects and critical thinking rather than hindering it.
