The Task
The Task
You have experienced a full and rewarding teaching career and have reached retirement. It is time for a new challenge! Following a dream you have held since viewing your first episode of Ace of Cakes you and three fellow colleagues have combined your artistic and creative skills to open a cake-decorating shop. Your group is quite successful and has developed beautiful and extraordinary creations for some pretty famous people.

Today, you have a request for a very unique wedding cake. The bride, Surya, originates from the country of Bali, while the groom, Adolfo, grew up in the mountains of Peru. Both are working toward doctorate degrees in Art and Archeology. Both have very strong ties to their native country. Their interests have led this couple to request a special cake that celebrates the beauty of the folk art found in both of their countries. This is a true union and they would like the cake to represent the commonalities between their two cultures—not a separate representation of each country but a joining of the two.

Your group’s task is to briefly research the folk art of both countries and create a drawing of a wedding cake for the couple. Your drawing does not have to be incredibly artistic. Stick figures will work, but do include brief descriptions of the symbols on the cake and what they represent.

You have a very short time to complete this task so your work must be efficient. Begin by assigning an expert role to each person in your group. Each of these experts will independently research an aspect of folk art from one of the two countries.

After you have collected the information required of your expert role, meet with the entire group and share what you have learned. With your group create a list of the commonalities you might incorporate into your cake design. Use this list to draw a cake that depicts these commonalities in the artwork of the two nations. Instead of parts of the cake representing each of the countries, the couple would like the cake to be a unified representation of their two lands. Check the scoring rubric to guide your work.
