John Stewart Bryan (1871-1944) was William and Mary's nineteenth president and seventeenth chancellor. It was before and during his time at the college that Colonial Williamsburg did much of its development and the college's buildings were restored to their 18th century appearance. He continued this construction with the building of the Sunken Gardens in 1935. According to his death certificate, he died at the age of 72 from a cerebral hemorrhage due to bronchitis. The Flat Hat says he had a cold that worsened into pneumonia. They remember him as "long missed on the campus he loved so well."
