On October 20, 1944, the United States invaded the Philippines to aid them in the expulsion of occupying Imperial Japanese forces, known as the Philippines Campaign. It is considered a decisive victory for the United States as these battles severely wounded the size and strength of the Japanese Navy. Fighting in the Philippines continued until the formal Japanese surrender on August 15, 1945.
