Laura W. Ekstrom is Chancellor Professor of Philosophy at William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. Professor Ekstrom's research interests range over metaphysics and ethics, centering on issues of human agency, including free will, moral responsibility, autonomy and the self. She has also published work in the philosophy of religion, as well as on the nature of compassion and its role in medicine.
She is the author of three books: Evil and Theodicy (Cambridge University Press, 2023); God, Suffering, and the Value of Free Will (Oxford University Press, 2021); and Free Will: A Philosophical Study (Westview Press, 2000). She is also the editor of Agency and Responsibility (Westview Press, 2001) and the author of more than 30 articles published in academic journals and edited collections.
Professor Ekstrom is currently at work writing a new book on autonomy and freedom, as well as "Theodicies" for the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, and Dialogues on Free Will (Routledge).
