ABSTRACT
This presentation looks into the effects and presence of cyberbullying and bullying in both middle and high schools in America and specifically the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. The project takes the idea that bullying has been a long-term epidemic among teenagers, but through the assessment of data and statistics in the U.S. and Virginia, the presentation seeks to find whether the fight to end bullying has had an effect on the number of occurrences schools have seen with bullying. The presentation defines the terms of both bullying and cyberbullying and looks into the stats to back up whether bullying and cyberbullying have truly been an epidemic in society. As technology has become much more advanced and popularized through cellphones and social media, it has become easier than ever for cyberbullying to occur. The project also looks at possible solutions for society to combat cyberbullying. The presentation seeks to find whether cyberbullying trends have increased in the past few years, finding a correlation between social media popularity and cyberbullying. The Virginia Department of Education has collected data on both the case of bullying and cyberbullying at each school and region of Virginia. The presentation looks at Virginia Beach city, Norfolk city, and Williamsburg-James City County public school data to asses bullying occurrences in the Hampton Roads area and assesses statistics given by Stopbullying.gov, an official website of the United States government.

Video 1 Slide 2:
“When I was at school- in high school, I remember the girls from my class... they were hanging out with some boys that I knew also. I went to meet some friends for some pizza that was at the same pizzeria and the boys pick me up and threw me into a trash can on the street on the corner of my block, while all the other girls in the school we’re leaving. They could see me in the trash,
and everybody was laughing... I was even laughing. I had that nervous giggle and I just remember like holding back the tears and lip quivering, like ‘don’t let them see you’ and I remember even one of the girls looking at me like ‘are you about to cry you’re pathetic are you about to cry?’”

“‘She’s being bullied almost daily and relentlessly to the point where she hates going to school. her self-esteem has dropped.’”
“This survivor was heartbroken when she learned that her friend’s 10-year-old daughter was struggling with extreme bullying and depression... ‘When you have someone telling you daily ‘you will never be anything. You’re nothing. You’re stupid. You’re worthless.’ Just all these things you start to believe it so that was another reason why I just fight, you know, whether it’s domestic violence or bullying or someone just not knowing their worth period, I will always fight.’”

“Minus this, now I’m online. This is a line, and this line is mine. You will kindly find that my feet and spine are on the plus sign. Now I’d like to assign and also define what one might find on the side of the line. I will not pretend that there are no consequences of saying something offensive online, no matter what my ignorant friend says. Words are all I have, and yeah I know it’s sad. We hide behind the mask of the latest social networking fad. So there’s respect to my status whether through Mark Zuckerberg or Tom, so I’ll treat you the same in person, and yeah accept your friend request mom.
This is a line and this line is mine. You will kindly find my feet and my spine are on the minus sign. I would like to assign and also define what one might find on this side of the line. I might seem unassuming, but if you only knew what I was doing, brewing spewing, spitting venom when I’m at the screen I ruin... reputations I will splatter, typing faster I get madder, and all the insults I will gather. You’re so lucky it’s only Saturday. You have one day, oh yes, Sunday... for my words to die away, and on that one day I must say, you’re gonna wish you had a different name... Then it’s Monday and at school, I’ll remind them all of what I said... Then it’s Tuesday, then Wednesday, and then we’ll all find out your dead. This is a line, and this line is mine... and now that I have assigned what one might find on either side, you will kindly find that my feet and my spine are on the plus sign... and I’m not moving. Where are you?
