March 30 & March 31

Graduate & Honors Research Symposium

Online Program

William & Mary

Welcome!

Dear Members of the William & Mary Community, Visiting Presenters, and Guests:

On behalf of the Arts & Sciences Graduate organizing committee, we would like to welcome you to the Graduate & Honors Research Symposium at William & Mary! This year our theme highlights the "and" in Arts & Sciences, bringing together Graduate and Honors students from across the disciplines. This theme is represented by the ampersand in our university's name.

In keeping with the “&,” many of the Symposium’s panels are interdisciplinary, bringing together presenters whose research center around a common theme but who represent disparate disciplines. We hope you will find this exciting and generative.

We hope you’ll join us for this year’s special event: the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition on Thursday, March 30 at 5:30 p.m. in the Commonwealth Auditorium. 3MT promotes interaction across research fields and degree programs by challenging students to effectively explain their research and its importance to a general audience in under three minutes. Join us, too, for the reception following the competition.

Be sure to join us for the Symposium’s culminating event, the Poster Session & Networking Reception on Friday, March 31, beginning at 3:30. Thirty graduate students and 12 honors students will present posters. Plus, we hope you’ll enjoy ample food and beverages as we celebrate our scholarly community.

The Symposium’s success depends on the knowledge and hard work of the presenters, as well as the university staff and volunteers who brought this important event back this year after its pandemic hiatus. The 2023 Symposium features 90 graduate students and 68 undergraduate honors students from Arts & Sciences at William & Mary; in addition, 13 students representing VIMS, ODU, VCU, and UVA join us in the Sadler Center to present their research. We would especially like to thank the William & Mary graduate faculty, staff, and administration and the A&S Graduate Studies Advisory Board for their commitment to graduate students and graduate research. Lastly, we would personally like to send a massive heartfelt thanks to Sarah Glosson, Director of the A&S Graduate Center, and the graduate students of the GHRS Organizing Committee; this Symposium would not have been possible without their dedication, expertise, and diligence.

Sincerely,

Chardé Reid & Marie Pellissier
