Description of Required Courses
TEDV 502 (3 units): Research in Teaching and Schooling:
A survey and analysis of recent research in teaching and schooling.
TEDV 505 (3 units): Equity Literacy in Schooling:
This course places equity (fairness) at the core of its investigation of schooling. Within the context of the cultures of students, schools, and communities, the course is designed to reflect knowledge growth in teaching as well as the critical/social theoretical frameworks in education that examine equity and inequity, justice and injustice. The course is based on the belief that students' and teachers' realities, experiences, values, and assumptions affect their interpretations and understandings of their own learning and teaching.
TEDV 520A (1 unit): Classroom Management and Instruction in Practice:
This course is designed to prepare students to begin teaching in their own classrooms. The course prepares students to develop a discipline plan and a classroom management plan, including class rules appropriate for the first day of school.
TEDV 520B (2 units): Classroom Management and Instruction in Practice:
This course promotes the acquisition of classroom management and assessment techniques, incorporating knowledge and skills of teaching models for secondary teachers. Students will recognize the role of rules and procedures within schools; the role of curriculum, instruction, and assessment in classroom management; the role of teaching model strategies in the delivery of the curriculum; and the need for multiple modalities of assessment of student learning. Students will examine the crucial role of values and beliefs in classroom management decisions.
TEDV 521 (3 units): Teaching Exceptional Students at the Middle and Secondary Level:
Standards-based methodologies for the instruction and assessment of exceptional students at the middle and secondary level. Graduate-level requirement include two reviews of research/literature projects/papers.
TEDV 527 (3 units): Adolescent Development and Learning:
This course provides an in-depth survey of the philosophies, practical and theoretical issues regarding adolescent development and learning.
TEDV 531 (3 units): Methods and Models of Teaching for Practicing Teachers:
This course is a Pedagogical Content Knowledge course that links content in math, science or the humanities/social sciences with culturally appropriate teaching methods.
TEDV 536 (3 units): Participant Research Methodologies for Practicing Teachers:
Theories and methods of participant research as a means of the professional development for practicing teachers.
TEDV 693A (3 units): Secondary School Internship for Practicing Teachers:
This internship is designed for students who are full time teachers and focuses on the practical application of theories and methods of instruction in the middle and secondary classroom.
TEDV 693B (3 units) Advanced Secondary School Internship for Practicing Teachers:
This advanced internship is designed for students who are full time teachers and focuses on the practical application of theories and methods of instruction in the middle and secondary classroom.
TEDV 693C (3 units) Advanced Secondary School Internship for Practicing Teachers II:
This internship is designed for students who are full time teachers and focuses on the practical application of theories and methods of instruction in the middle and secondary classroom, as well as reflection on practice.
TEDV 693D (2 units) Advanced Secondary School Internship for Practicing Teachers III:
This internship focuses on the practical application of theories and methods of instruction in the middle and secondary classroom.
ETCV 511 (3 units): Learning Technologies in the Digital Age:
The course addresses the essentials of computer operations; the integration of computer technology into the learning environment; learning theory/instructional design using technology; and the use of presentation and related software. The course is directed at instructional technologists and educators. Graduate-level requirements include a final topic paper.
LCEV 508 (3 units): Methods of Teaching English to English Language Learners:
Methodology for the teaching of English to the English Language Learner (ELL). This course will familiarize the students with a historical overview of different methods as well as influences from the field of psychology. It will introduce students to what is currently considered quality methodology in ELL education. Graduate-level requirements include an in-depth research paper and/or another project(s).
