EC Foundation Courses

Prior to beginning the Early Childhood Core (EC Core) you should complete a minimum of nine credits or three foundation courses. For many of you, courses completed at the community college level might transfer and address this requirement. Please speak with an academic adviser.

The required foundation courses include the following:

• TEDV 301: Foundations of Early Childhood Education (3 units)

• TEDV 325: Assessment in Early Childhood (3 units)

• TEDV 370 Understanding Early Childhood Math and Science (3 units)

• FSHV 323: Infancy/Child Development

• FSHV 337: Dynamics of Family Relations or HUSV 371: Parent, Family, and Community (3 units)

The BAS EC program is divided into two distinct cores: BAS Core and the EC Core.

EC Core

The EC Core addresses the early childhood curriculum. These courses are only offered once per academic year. Please be mindful of when they are offered. A schedule of courses is provided for you at the bottom of this page.

• LCEV 404: Cultural Diversity in Education (3 units) or TLS 304 Language, Culture, Race and Identity in Education (3 Units)

• TEDV 470: Early Childhood Guidance and Classroom Management (3 units)

• TEDV 473: Developmentally Appropriate Practices in Early Childhood Environments (3 units)

• TEDV 474: Teaching Exceptional Children in Early Childhood (3 units)

• TEDV 482: Early Childhood Language and Literacy (3 units)

• TEDV 412: Technology in Early Childhood Environments (3 units)

• TEDV 373: Understanding the Framework of Early Childhood Environments (3 units)

Electives (3 units)

• TEDV 496: Topics in Elementary Education

• LCEV 408: Methods of Teaching English to English Language Learners - TLS 304 can be used as a substitution

Internship and Capstone

• TEDV 493E Internship in Educational Support (3 units)

• TEDV 498E Early Childhood Senior Capstone

*Note: TEDV 493E and TEDV 498E are taken together for a full 15 weeks. You will enroll in these courses when the majority of the EC Core is completed.
