11th ELSI Symposium
The Living Universe
Thanks to all for a Great Symposium!
Overview
Dates: Monday-Wednesday, 6-8 March 2023 (See below for detailed schedule)
Location: Earth-Life Science Institute and Digital Hall, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Ookayama Campus, Meguro, Tokyo, Japan (See below for detailed map)
Scientific Organizing Committee: Kosuke Fujishima (Chair), Hidenori Genda, John Hernlund, Shawn McGlynn
Abstract of the Symposium: As humans and scientists we are accustomed to distinguishing things from other things, treating them as separate and independent objects. This enables our brains to compare and contrast, to emphasize differences, to pit the parts against the counterparts, and to learn something in the process. However, the idea of separateness is an abstraction that is less useful in the context of the deep space-time evolution of the universe, where the connectedness of all is emphasized. It is in this latter perspective that we approach the topic of the 11th symposium.
We at ELSI are convening our 11th annual symposium in order to consider the inseparability of life and the universe. In other words, instead of simply considering "life in the universe" we want to begin to think about the "living universe" in which there is no clear boundary between life and non-life.
