Hi! My name is Kshirin (She/Her) and I have been playing the piano and singing for over 10 years! Growing up in a small community in New Brunswick, I have taken part in numerous music competitions and festivals, and have continued to participate in local events in Ottawa. I have also performed in Concert Bands, playing the alto saxophone, as well as in choirs, quartets, duets, and solos, performing musical theatre and folk pieces.
"A Light in the Dark Sky" was based on the chord progression of Joe Hisaishi’s theme from Castle in the Sky. I also tried to incorporate some of his stylistic elements, including having a simple repeating melody that builds and, like in the original theme, transitioning the piece from minor to major during the second section (chorus). Furthermore, the structure of the piece is A-B-A, with two similar sections making up part A. Additionally, in order to create an elegant sound while conveying a picture of a cloudy day, I used the piano, harp and violin, starting with pizzicato in the violin and transitioning to arco in the B section.
This piece was the result of research and analysis done on the cultural and musical structure of John Williams’ Superman Theme. In considering the exciting build-up to the main melody of this theme, I decided to create a fanfare using that of the Superman Theme as inspiration. I used mostly brass instruments in this piece to convey the strong and powerful sound, with the trumpet, horn, and trombone, and also used percussion -- the timpani and cymbals -- to develop a steady beat. Throughout, I incorporated many triplets, intervals in fourths and fifths, dotted rhythms and timpani rolls in order to illustrate the military-like qualities of fanfare, as well as the strength and heroism we hear in a typical march.
For my portfolio, I decided to experiment with different genres of Johannes Brahms Brahms’ Lullaby, including spooky and march versions. In the former experiment, I transposed the key to its relative minor and, in order to enforce a scary music box sound, I chose the violoncello to play the bass notes, the violin to play the medium register and play part of the melody, and the celesta to play the higher notes as well as the melody. In the latter experiment, I changed the time signature to 4/4 to create a steady tempo, and put emphasis on the first and third beats by using higher and more accented notes. I also added a short fanfare, a common introduction for marches, incorporating several triplet rhythms and fourth/fifth intervals.
