Hi, my name is Fiona Zhang and I’m from Guangdong China. On the weekend, sometimes I’ll bake delicious cakes or cookies for my friends, it is one of my personal interests; but mostly, I spend time with my little dog. She is really cute.
I played piano for many years, and I have attended some competitions as well. I found it super fun because I enjoyed the moment of being on the podium and getting awards. This year I just completed my Grade 8 RCM, and I’m working on Grade 9 RCM now. I have also done some compositions. The process was quite difficult for me, but I did learn new skills and techniques, and hopefully I could improve next year.
In "Wonderland", I used flute, piano and violoncello. The purpose of the flute is to create a far and soft environment for the piece and also bring the main melody by piano. The use of violoncello is to extend the range of song and also to create a “wonderland” style. The idea for this composition was inspired by Joe Hisaishi’s Princess Mononoke Theme.
This arrangement is based on the song "This Land is Your Land" by Woody Guthrie. I chose to add string instruments into my creation. By adding strings to a piece of music can completely transform its sound and character. For example, it could add warmth and depth, as I can give it a fuller, more dynamic sound. Also, I added strings to this arrangement in order to create a new version of the song that highlights different elements or emotions. Moreover, I also want to add complexity into the piece. The interplay between different string parts can create intricate harmonies and counterpoint, adding depth and interest to the music. Overall, I do think adding a string instrument to a music rearrangement can be a great way to enhance the sound, create a new arrangement, and also increase emotional impact or complexity.
I did a lo-fi composition this year because I never tried it before, but also because lo-fi music allows for experimentation and creative expression; and its simplicity of the production techniques used in low-fi music allows for a more raw and authentic sound, which can inspire unique and creative ideas. Moreover, Low-fi music often involves minimal instrumentation and production; and I like this type of “easier” composition, because by reducing instrumentation and production, I could focus on the basics of music composition, such as melody and rhythm.
