MEET ROWAN!

Hey there, my name is Rowan (She/Her) and I'm from Chelsea, Quebec! I really enjoy reading, especially short story collections, and I also love listening to music -- some of my favourite artists are Phoebe Bridgers, Alex G, and Black Country, New Road. This year, I also took up woodworking and built my own electric guitar as part of my Personal Project.

In Middle School, I played French horn and trumpet, but now I mainly focus on guitar and drums. I am self-taught on guitar and have been playing for just over two years on both acoustic and electric. I like learning fingerstyle pieces and playing in groups -- this was my first year playing drums and I’ve really enjoyed the experience.

"FOG'S EMBRACE"

"Fog’s Embrace" is a soundscape composition written primarily for flute, harp, piano, violoncello, and contrabass. The theme of this composition was inspired by the mystery and serenity of fog as it forms, spreads, and dissipates. To reflect this idea, the composition begins texturally sparse and dynamically soft to create a sense of stillness and calm, gradually growing to represent fog spreading across a lake. The climax introduces new textures, ranges, and cyclical patterns to represent the fog clearing, finally ending with a sparse texture to symbolize clarity. My intention with this composition was for listeners to visualize the imagery of fog and embrace the uncertainty, but ultimate clarity, that it brings. I encourage the audience to listen to how musical ideas of different ranges are used to create depth and how textural elements help grow the piece to reach its climax.

Another Highlight from This Year

As part of my Grade 10 Personal Project, I built an electric guitar from scratch. I was inspired to take on this project due to my interest in guitar design and the internal workings of electric guitars. Throughout the process, I was able to learn new many woodworking skills as well as how to solder!
