Hi! I'm Tina Zhang (she/her) from Guangzhou, China! Please feel free to call me by my other name Kaming/Jiaming! You might be wondering why I have two Chinese names -- long story short, my father accidentally spelled my name wrong without realizing it when registering my birth and it was not until we were at an airport in Japan when my mother realized that my name had been misspelled.
From the ages of 6 to 11, I played the piano but I gave it up because I hated practicing. However, my passion for it returned after I was 13 years old when I eventually started playing piano again. As a hobby, I play guitar and I have taken only a couple of classes, but I found them to be super boring so I decided to learn it myself. The violin is also on my future to-do list but it should have been at the top of my list years ago.
This main theme is written for Cinderella, the fairytale character from the live-action movie of Cinderella. Specifically, this leitmotif is inspired by the ballroom scene in the palace with the Prince. The key of C Major is used in my main motif as its characteristics are pure and certain, which I believe portrays Cinderella's personality. Also, I used strings in a slow tempo to create an elegant dance scene.
This variation to the main theme is based on the scene from the movie when Cinderella's Fairy Godmother demonstrates her magical abilities, casting magic to help Cinderella get ready for the ball. This magical feeling is created using the glockenspiel in a fast yet delightful tempo.
What did you find to be the most enjoyable from this experience?
I enjoyed making the motif the most. The reason for that is that I have no clue how to compose before, but I learned it from the classes, and I decided on different instruments and tried different layering techniques. I get to create my music for a character, it’s super fun!
What did you find to be the most challenging from this experience?
I found it most challenging on making a leitmotif. As an above answer, I suddenly changed my leitmotif scene from “running downstairs” to “fairy godmother converting”. It is truly a big challenge for both me and my teacher because I have to work on it in two days and send it to my teacher and wait for feedback, it is genuinely suffering for me due to my poor composition skill.
