Hi! My name is Maya (She/Her) and I am from Houston, Texas.
I like roller coasters and horror movies. As someone who plays the harp and also dances, I enjoy many forms of the arts. I have been dancing for 12 years and playing the harp for 10 years now. In fact, I completed my Grade 8 exam for the Royal Conservatory of Music last year!
The intention for this piece is to make it sorrowful and sad, imagining that it is part of the soundtrack for a sad scene in an animated movie. I used two violins, one for the melody and another for the bass, the flute and the piano in my music. The style is most importantly inspired by Joe Hisaishi's dramatic yet sad music. As such, I named this piece “Woe” as it means great sorrow, distress, and sadness; I feel like this title captures the essence of my piece as I want my audience to feel the sense of despair and melancholy while it being dramatic as well.
This is a composition scored for the horror short Pictured.
This is "Exploration" from the film Coraline by Bruno Coulais performed on the harp and piano by Maya Allen and Emma Farquhar.
"Mystical Forest" is a contemporary piece written for harp and violin, inspired by the idea of a mystical forest in the night. This is a lively and magical forest that is also sometimes dangerous, so I wanted to express the feelings of darkness and suspense in my piece, as well as those of curious wonder and awe. Through building and releasing the tension, I want my listeners to feel like they are in a mystical forest that is not only magical but also chaotic and unpredictable.
