Teacher instructions: Students will consider what having empathy should look like, sound like and feels like at Ellesmere College. Working in pairs, students will complete the Y chart below. Students should consider different setting within the school, such as in class, on the bus, at the canteen etc. Pairs will then share back key ideas with the rest of the class. Teachers will summarise key benefits of the school community showing empathy in and out of class.
Purpose of activity: For students to consider the positive effects of having empathy towards others and how it feels when people show empathy for them.
At Ellesmere College, empathy is understanding and caring about how someone else is feeling.
We show this by:
Putting ourselves in other people’s shoes
Being kind
Being compassionate towards others
Understanding that people learn in different ways
What would the world look like if nobody showed empathy?
Give an example of a time you have seen someone show empathy?
