Mr. McBurney's Musings

Principal's Message

Dear EAMS Students and Parents,

It is with great enthusiasm that I welcome you to Elkhorn Area Middle School. Your three years at the middle level will be full of variety, laughter, and learning. In my opinion, there is no more unique experience in education than these formative years. I look forward to working with you and watching our students grow socially, emotionally, and academically throughout their years at EAMS.

Our school has a staff that is dedicated to working with middle-level students, and our work will be driven by developing high performance relationships. This means simultaneously caring for our students while pressing them to succeed. The staff at EAMS recognizes the diversity of our students as people and learners. Through a variety of strategies, we will give students the opportunity to explore, grow, and learn in a setting that teaches them about themselves and the greater world.

Middle school is a time of transition. Not long after transitioning to sixth grade, students will soon shift their focus to the ninth grade transition. Through these years it is common for students to develop new passions and create new friendships. In this time of change, the social and emotional well-being of our students is paramount. Our team of educators is dedicated to helping students and parents navigate these experiences, and we look forward to that collaborative journey.

A core responsibility of mine is to serve you. Through open and honest communication with students and parents, we can meet our shared goal of continuously improving the middle-school experience for all students and building the foundation of their future successes. Please feel free to contact me directly at any time with questions or concerns. Your voice is valued and an integral part of our school community. I can be reached at (262) 723-6800 x1501 or by e-mail at mcbury@elkhorn.k12.wi.us; appointments can also be scheduled at (262) 723-6800 ext. 1506.

Sincerely,

Ryan McBurney Principal EAMS

Vaping Concerns

Families--I wanted to share this article I came across with you. It discusses the public health warning that recently came out in Milwaukee as a result of vaping. A law enforcement officer described vaping to me as "our generation's smoking." As an educator and parent, the most frightening aspects of vaping are the unknown effect and ease of access.

The above article discusses potential health concerns. As I mentioned, ease of access is also an issue for middle-level students. Many cases we deal with involve an older student providing access; however, one area that has also come up is online ordering.

If you have questions regarding vaping with students, please do not hesitate to contact me or the associate principals.

Transitioning Back to School

Coming back to school is a big event for students and families, and with that change can come some very normal and natural challenges. As a school, we spend a lot of time targeting the transition back to school and how to build a community as the school year starts anew.

As a parent of a son who is transitioning from an elementary to an intermediate school this year, I read this article and wanted to pass it along. I want my son and our students at EAMS to be successful in their transition, and this article gave some practical suggestions that my family is using.
