Welcome to First Grade at Skelly Elementary!
This is my 18th year teaching in El Dorado and my 6th teaching First Grade. This is an exciting age for students because they grow and change so much!
I keep in touch with parents best through Class Dojo. You can see pictures and updates, your child's behavior and send private messages. Every parent has been given a code but if you need again, please feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
I send home a homework folder with your child nearly every day. In it is your child's daily Dojo percentage. Please focus more on the reasons why red or green points were given rather than the percentage. Students earn three easy greens everyday: to school on time, folder signed and read last night. These three things encourage healthy habits in your child with responsibility, accountability and reading skills.
Reading a book each night is the assigned homework. I only send home papers that weren't finished in class. I believe kids need time at home to be a kid and enjoy family time, sports, or playtime. Research supports 20 minutes of reading each night for young readers- so that is what I like to see!
Decodable Readers!! (iwow)
The following links are pages of decodable texts, organized by lesson. These stories come directly from our reading curriculum. They are excellent reading material because unlike regular books, they contain the sight words we are learning in class as well as text that the students should be able to sound out (decode). These decodable readers are great for struggling readers or on grade level readers. My preference is for students to read these each night if your child is unable to read the books you have. (Keep in mind books are typically written to entertain or teach facts, not to teach reading. Decodable readers ARE written to teach students how to read.) These are the same reading passages that are sent home.
