8th Grade Math III Syllabus

Course Name: 8th grade Math III

Course Emphasis: Big Ideas use a student centered approach that opens doors to abstract thought, reasoning, and inquiry as students persevere to answer the Essential Questions that introduce each section. The foundation of the program is the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Content and Standards for Mathematical Practice. Students are subtly introduced to “Habits of Mind” that help them internalize concepts for greater depth of understanding. The Big Ideas series exposes students to highly motivating and relevant problems, and it prepares students for the rigor and depth needed for a rich, mathematical education.

*I usually drop the lowest quiz score for each semester if all quizzes have been taken. Yet, I won’t drop the lowest quiz grade if a student is caught cheating on a quiz. Cheating on a quiz may result in a zero or reduced score. Cheating on an assignment will result in a zero for the assignment.

Assignments: Most paper & online assignments will be due at the end of class. If extra time is allotted for an assignment, then it becomes homework and collected near the beginning of class the following day. You will receive 1 yellow card with 3 late passes from your Seminar teacher to be used in Math. Late assignments will need to have a yellow or blue late pass attached from me. If it has a yellow pass attached then I need to sign your yellow late pass card at the same time. Yellow passes means that you can still earn 100% on your late assignment though a blue pass means that it is worth 50% or less. Keep in mind that I expect your late assignments to be completed if you took the extra time. Please realize that you will receive assignment points based upon your completion and accuracy of all problems. An assignment includes all daily assignments such as a worksheet or work assigned from the textbook or online assignment on Big Ideas Math. Participation points are earned for active participation on notes, warm up, activities, games and puzzles whether on iPads or otherwise. Active participation means the student is cooperative, attentive, and actively participating in learning.

Student Expectations:

Students learn Math by writing the steps from notes and then practicing problems on your own. I expect you to learn by doing the mathematical steps then you can show me what you learned easily on the quiz.
