It can be handy to have:

• a candle

• a piece of chalk

• Bonus: If you have frankincense and myrrh, they would be appropriate for this devotion

However, all that is needed is prayer. You can improvise as much as you desire. Any candle (on no candle at all) will do. Likewise, you can trace the markings with your finder, with a pencil, or whatever you are comfortable using if you do not have chalk.
