What is Sound Healing Therapy?
When we understand that everything vibrates at a certain frequency the answer to this question becomes easier to imagine. Every part of the body will resonate at its own frequency. Sounds have a rhythm to them which can have varying effects on the body. Music can change our brain wave pattern to reduce or increase beats per minute as well as speed up or reduce our heart rate.
This rhythm of activity can vary. It’s effected by endless external and internal stimuli, therefore the rhythm of our bodies and in turn the frequency changes all the time. When there is a resonant match whereby one dominant sound ‘attracts’ a sound into alignment with it, healing can then begin to take place in the right context. When one area of the body is out of tune, it will not resonate with the rest of the body therefore a lack of flow in one’s energy will affect the vibration of the whole body’s energy field.
The principle of entrainment is a further way of understanding sound healing. The body cells and energy will ‘listen’ and respond to healing sounds that are strong and clear. It does this by falling into alignment with these sounds, they become a resonant match. The frequency begins to alter by coming into alignment with the new tone.
What are the benefits of sound healing therapy?
There are a wide range of sound healing applications. Including: release from pain, supporting relaxation, improved circulation, Chakra balancing, Ultrasound etc. It can help with singing, better concentration, meditation and sleeping better. Scientific research is recognising that it can help with longer term illnesses such as Dementia, Epilepsy and even cancer.

What happens during a sound healing therapy session?
When doing a basic sound healing treatment a healer will generally start off by toning an ooo sound into the body's energy field to determine where there is an imbalance in a client’s energy. The sound of the tone tends to alter in the areas where dissonance – a lack of harmony, is occurring in the body.
There are various ways a sound healing session can be done...
A basic treatment would start with a client lying down on a therapy bed face down to start with. A healer will tone into body's energy as described above to scan the field and then focus on areas of dissonance using the voice. Asking for a rightful connection, neutrality and to be a channel for sound to come through that will serve the clients highest purpose.
As part of a sound healing session the body is scanned using sound. Each energy centre has its own corresponding vowel sound (in the West):
Base – Uh
Sacral – Ooo
Solar Plexus – Oh
Heart – Ah
Throat – Eye
Third Eye – Aye
Crown – Eee
Sounding the correct tone into to an energy centre (chakra) using the right vowel sound gives it an opportunity to fall into alignment with the sound that best serves the energy flow, sound or frequency of the energy centre, and this is relevant to any part of one’s body and energy.
The role of intention plays an important part here, because it is this, along with the healing sound frequency that focuses the treatment and allows healing to take place.
