What is Play and Art?

George Szekely started the study of play and art and has been writing about it since 1975. As creative players students can prepare for art classes with materials and ideas and transform open ended objects by self-prescribed investigation. Play is part of a life-long artistic behavior.

NAPA Conference 2019

DAY 1

Thursday

9-10 am MEET THE PARTICIPANTS: A creative play celebration, a sharing of experiences, and how our professional camaraderie began.

10-11 am ART ROOM: THE SCHOOLS CENTER FOR PLAY AND INNOVATION

Dr. George Szekely welcomes art teachers and engages in an illustrated discussion of his journey to becoming an advocate for play in the art class. A primer for setting up and conducting the play-based art classes.

10-12 pm A SELECTION OF SPECIAL WORKSHOPS AND LECTURES presented by experienced art room players

12-1 pm LUNCH TIME FUN with food plays, including prizes.

1-2 pm WORDS OF ADVICE, WARNING, AND ENCOURAGEMENT from a distinguished roster of invited presenters.

2-4 pm VISIT TO LEXINGTON LANDMARKS IN PLAY AND ART TEACHING: Artplay, Art and Play Studio, and Lexington Children’s Museum.

5 pm, GROUP DINNERS: and the conversation continues. Sign up for dining in one of the many fine restaurants in the city. At each site you will be joined by one of our Lexington Play and Art advocates for a great meal and gentle idea sharing.

Day 2

Friday

8: 30 – 9 am LIGHT BREAKFAST and warm morning greetings

9 : 10 am A SPECTACULAR KEYNOTE BY a long-time friend and special supporter of Play In Art Classes.

10-12 pm MORE, FINE, HANDS ON WORKSHOPS: presented by guest artist-players from all over the country.

12-1 pm LUNCH TOGETHER, and a special visit to Szekely’s House of Treasures, the art-play store room.

1-3 pm LET’S PLAY TOGETHER: Group Art Playing Activities that can be used in every classroom.

3-4 pm END OF CONFERENCE GATHERING: a conversation with NAPA leaders Ilona and George Szekely.
