Segregation in public spaces - Throughout the late-19th and 20th centuries, Jim Crow laws prevented Black people from being in the same spaces and using the same facilities as white people. For example, in addition to segregated schools and stores, Black people were required by law to use separate public transportation seating, restrooms, water fountains, hospital units, ticket booths, and even separate equipment at barber shops. White people strongly and violently resisted desegregation of public spaces even as laws banning segregation were passed. See EJI’s Lynching in America website and report for more information.
