Unequal Access to Quality Education

Unequal access to quality education - Brown v. Board of Education was a landmark case striking down racial segregation in schools in 1954. Today, courts have abandoned this commitment to equal education, public schools across America remain racially segregated, and the achievement gap between the wealthiest and poorest students is growing dramatically.  Even in schools that are racially diverse, discriminatory policies, like tracking which excludes Black children from more advanced academic groups, deny Black children access to the highest quality of education. Additionally, many states and school districts use funding systems that are racially discriminatory. See EJI’s article on Unequal Access to Quality Education for more information.
