The AVID Graffiti Wall is a collaborative, visual strategy that encourages student voice, creativity, and critical thinking. In this activity, students respond to a prompt, theme, or essential question by writing or drawing their thoughts on a shared space—often a large piece of butcher paper or a whiteboard “wall.” This strategy helps build a sense of community while allowing students to reflect, connect ideas, and engage in academic conversations in an interactive, low-stakes format. It's especially effective for activating prior knowledge, summarizing learning, or exploring diverse perspectives.
SET UP:
Designate a space for the wall (paper, whiteboard, or digital platform).
STEPS:
PREPARE PROMPTS: Pose clear, open-ended questions or prompts related to the lesson or topic.
INDIVIDUAL RESPONSES: Students write or draw their initial thoughts on the wall, using different colored markers to distinguish their contributions.
PEER INTERACTION: Encourage students to read and respond to each other's ideas, adding comments, questions, or connections.
DISCUSSION: Conclude with a class discussion where students share their observations and insights from the graffiti wall.
EXTENSIONS:
Gallery Walk: Students move around the classroom, viewing and commenting on each other's work.
Timed Responses: Use time limits to encourage quick thinking and focused contributions.
Before, During, and After: Use the graffiti wall at various stages of a lesson to activate prior knowledge, facilitate discussion during reading, or summarize learning.
Visual Representations: Encourage students to use drawings, symbols, and other visual elements to express their ideas.
