Schools should create AVID site goals based on the four indicators in the AVID certification process: Instruction, Culture, Systems, and Leadership. These goals should focus on ensuring high-quality, rigorous instruction that fosters critical thinking and college readiness. Schools should aim to cultivate a positive and inclusive school culture that promotes high expectations and student success, particularly for underrepresented groups. Strengthening systems to provide consistent support and monitoring of student progress is also essential, as is fostering strong leadership that drives AVID’s mission and vision throughout the school community. By aligning site goals with these four indicators, schools can create a sustainable and impactful AVID program that empowers all students to succeed in college and careers.
STEPS:
1. UNDERSTAND THE AVID FRAMEWORK AND EXPECTATIONS:
Teachers begin by familiarizing themselves with the AVID philosophy, core values, and instructional strategies.
A focus is placed on how AVID's instructional practices align with the goal of improving college readiness for all students.
2. REVIEW DATA AND ASSESS NEEDS:
Teachers and school leadership teams analyze current student data, including academic performance, college readiness indicators, and other relevant measures.
This helps to identify areas of need and where AVID strategies can make the most impact.
3. COLLABORATE AND SET SITE GOALS:
Teachers, administrators, and AVID coordinators work together to set specific site goals.
Goals should be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) and address the areas of need identified during the data review.
4. DEVELOP ACTION PLANS:
Teachers collaborate on creating action plans that outline the specific steps and strategies they will implement to achieve the site goals.
These plans include details about AVID methodologies, including WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading) strategies.
5. IMPLEMENT AVID STRATEGIES AND COLLECT EVIDENCE:
Teachers integrate AVID strategies into their teaching practices. This includes using AVID tools, such as interactive notebooks, Cornell Notes, Socratic Seminars, and others to enhance student engagement and critical thinking.
Collect evidence in a document, spreadsheet or website to demonstrate completion or work on the AVID Site Goals
6. MONITOR PROGRESS AND ADJUST PLANS AS NEEDED:
Teachers and administrators regularly monitor the progress of the action plans and the effectiveness of the strategies.
Data is revisited to determine if the site goals are being met, and adjustments are made to the action plans as necessary.
7. TURN IN EVIDENCE AND DISCUSS GOAL OUTCOMES AND SUCCESSES:
Turn in your AVID Site Goal Evidence to certify progress on Site Goal Completion
Discuss with team or site the results of the site goal process, including the achievement of goals, improvements in student outcomes, and how AVID strategies contributed to success.
8. CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT AND PLANNING FOR THE NEXT CYCLE:
Based on the outcomes and reflections, new goals are set for the following year or certification cycle.
Teachers and administrators continue to improve and refine their practice, ensuring that AVID strategies are embedded in the school culture for sustained success.
