WICOR Study Buddies is a structure that provides students with a variety of Study Buddies to collaborate with over an extended period of time. Students will develop long-term relationships with their WICOR Study Buddies, which in turn, builds classroom community by creating a safe learning environment for students to take risks.
STEPS:
PREPARING FOR PAIRING: One way to have students find WICOR buddies is to play “Would You Rather” to divide the students into two groups and then have them pair that way. Have 5 Would You Rather statements ready to share with students. If students need more support in choosing a partner the teacher can assign 1 or all 5 of each student's WICOR buddies. How many buddies are assigned (if any), will determine how many Would You Rather statements in the next steps.
WICOR LOG: Provide students with the WICOR Study Buddy Log or give students a teacher created tracking sheet that will help them remember their buddies name for each letter.
WOULD YOU RATHER: Display the first Would You Rather statement to the class. Have students move to the specific side of the room based on their selection. Once they have moved to their side of the room, have students find a partner by introducing themselves to someone on the same side of the room. They will record the partner's name on the “W” of the WICOR log. This is now their “W” buddy. Continue to call out more “Would You Rather” statements and have students regroup and find new buddies. Students will record the new partner for each letter of WICOR on the WICOR Study Buddy log. By the end every student should have a different buddy for each letter.
COLLABORATION: After determining WICOR Buddies, any time students need a partner, the teacher will call out one of the WICOR letters. For example, the teacher might instruct students to work with their “W” partner when giving feedback during the writing process.
SCAFFOLDS:
Have the WICOR Buddy log in a place that students can find it easily, especially in the beginning.
Start with one letter at a time. This may be helpful when getting to know the class and who works best together.
Create a WICOR Buddy social contract, so students know the expectations when working together.
EXTENSIONS:
Change buddies so students have an opportunity to work with everyone.
