Stand–Share–Sit is an energizer that provides students with a state change while they respond to a question and summarize or process information. Students practice effective collaboration skills and accountability for engaging in a task.
HANDOUTS and RESOURCES:
STEPS:
NO MATERIALS NEEDED: This activity requires no special materials or setup.
STUDENTS STAND: Students stand at their desks, holding any necessary notes or information for sharing.
SHARE IN TURNS: Students take turns to share their responses to the assigned task (like a written reflection or problem-solving strategies). The sharing order around the table does not have to be sequential.
SIT AFTER SHARING: Each student sits down after sharing their response.
SCAFFOLDS:
Provide students with discussion frames to support them in explaining their answers/opinion.
Have students complete a Think It, Ink It, Share It (Stand, Share, Sit is the share it activity), to support students in individually thinking about the topic and writing down ideas before sharing.
Use a talking piece to indicate who is sharing.
EXTENSIONS:
Have students develop questions around a topic. All students will stand. The first student will ask their question, the next student will answer the question and ask the next student their question. This repeats until every student has asked and answered a question. The student can only sit once they have done both.
Once student groups have completed one round of stand, share, sit, have student groups mix up and share again.
Have students complete the activity. Then they will choose a representative from their group to join the class group (one representative from each group) who then does the activity again in front of the class.
