Quick energizers are fast, high-impact activities that boost student energy and focus in just a few minutes. In the AVID classroom, they’re perfect for transitions, re-engaging students, or kicking off a lesson with energy. These rapid activities—like a quick stretch, brain teaser, or group challenge—build community and reset attention without taking much time from instruction.
QUICK ENERGIZER EXERCISES:
MAKE X'S AND O'S:
Walk kids through this exercise:
Sitting in a chair, feet on the ground, legs together – curl your body into your lap, folding yourself into an “O” shape.
Next, open your arms and legs wide, forming an “X” shape with your whole body.
Repeat!
CELEBRATE SILENTLY:
At the end of an activity, have students stand up and silently cheer and gesture in celebration... but in COMPLETE SILENCE.
Can they celebrate the quietest?
CLAP ON!:
When you say “clap on" kiddos clap their hands vigorously together.
When you say “clap off,” they stop as quickly as they can and freeze.
3, 2, 1, BLASTOFF!:
Instruct kiddos to stand and then squat down with their hands on the ground in front of them.
All together, count down 3, 2, 1.
When you get to zero, they should push up like a rocket, jumping as high as they can – letting all of their energy burst from their center.
5, 4, 3, 2, 1:
Have students stand and the teacher instructs them through 5 activities.
They will do five different movements in descending order.
For example, teacher would say “Do 5 jumping jacks, spin around 4 times, hop on one foot 3 times, walk all the way around the class 2 times, give your neighbor 1 high five”.
SIX SPOTS:
Number six spots around your room, 1 to 6.
Have students choose a numbered spot.
Roll a dice.
All the students at the number rolled must go back to their seats.
Students then choose another spot.
AVID YOGA:
Have kiddos stand and spell A-V-I-D with their whole body! “Give me an ‘A’”! (then students try to shape an A), “Give me a ‘V’!” and so on...
PIANO FINGERS:
Have students touch 2 fingers on opposite hands when called out. First, the Index fingers; then, the pointers; middles; ring and then thumb.
When called out, they touch those fingers.
Call out random fingers to energize their brain!
TAKE A CRUISE ON AN IMAGINARY SKATEBOARD:
Have kiddos line up next to a wall and place one hand on the wall.
Tell them to plant the foot closest to the wall and swing the other leg, as if pushing off the ground on a skateboard.
Start slowly, with tiny swings, then move faster to stronger moves. Repeat on other side.
PLAY POPCORN:
Students should be sitting.
Then, at any time, a student can jump up and say “pop!”
Once they do, that student remains standing.
If two students pop-up at the same time, everyone takes their seats and the game starts over.
How quickly can the entire class pop up without having to start over??
QUICK AS A SNAP, WINK:
Tell kiddos to snap their left fingers while they wink their right eye.
Switch to snapping their right fingers while winking their left eye.
Can they do it?
TRADING PLACES:
Have students stand.
Call out a trait and everyone who has that trait must switch places (student who does not stays put).
Examples: “Everyone with curly hair,” “Everyone who ate cereal for breakfast,” “Everyone who is wearing stripes,” “Everyone who is left handed”
MIRROR MIRROR:
Have students stand in front of a partner and assign one person to be the mirror.
Their job is to do everything the partner does.
After a few minutes, switch.
