Examine two factors that affect the range of a horizontal release projectile:
1) horizontal velocity and 2) release height.
Raise the cannon to a height of 10 m and set it to a 0° angle.
Also select the tool shown here. This tool allows us to find the range (x) and time in the air (t).
Set the initial velocity to 2 m/s. Fire the cannon and record the time and range in the data table below. To record the range and time, place the crosshairs of the tool on the impact point. Increase the velocity to 4 m/s and repeat. Fill in the rest of the data table.
Next, we will examine the role of height on time and range. Set the cannon to an initial height of 2 m and a horizontal velocity of 15 m/s, keeping the launch angle at 0°. Fill in the data table to the left.

2. What effect (if any) did height have on time of flight?
3. What is the relationship between an object’s horizontal velocity and its range? Be specific – is it a linear or non-linear relationship?
4. What is the relationship between an object’s height and its range? Again be specific – is it a linear or non-linear relationship?
