Dear CNPS families,
Today, District Cross Country, last Friday Prep-2 Tabloid Sports, and an upcoming excursion to Buda for the Grade 1/2 students. It probably seems to parents that we are constantly sending home forms and asking for money! We try to keep our excursions to a couple per term, plus one camp for the year for Grade 2-6 students. Thanks for your support with our extra-curricular programs; they are enriching for the students, and we feel that they are a crucial part of the school experience. (Just for future reference, if forms and payments can be sorted a week out from events, it would be so greatly appreciated; teachers are asked to get notes to parents with 2 weeks notice where possible).
WORKING BEES x2
We have our usual termly Working Bee on Sunday May 18 - see flier in the Community Noticeboard section of this newsletter. In the meantime, if anyone can pop into school over this weekend, or on Monday or Tuesday afternoon to help clean up outside in preparation for our Open Morning on Wednesday...that would be fabulous!
PARENT-TEACHER MEETINGS
Thank you to our class teachers, for a big day/evening this week, completing parent-teacher meetings. Thanks to our parents for supporting this opportunity; I hope it was helpful. These meetings are optional, however, if you weren't able to book a time this week, and your child's teacher has contacted you to request a meeting, please try and make a time to see them before reports are due later this term.
OPEN MORNING NEXT WEEK
As part of Education Week, we will be offering an Open Morning into classrooms and specialist programs next Wednesday, from 9-11. While this is often attended by prospective Prep parents, we encourage current CNPS parents to come in and see our classrooms in action. I will send some information out on Monday or Tuesday, regarding the programs for the morning.
2026 ENROLMENTS ARE OPEN
It is that time of year, when I receive questions about the protocols for enrolment; the information below is helpful to pass on to any of your friends who may be wondering:
If you already have a child at CNPS, your younger child is a guaranteed enrolment (Sibling rule). Please still grab a form as soon as possible so we know our numbers.
If you live closest to CNPS, you are a guaranteed enrolment. Come to the Office and collect an ENROLMENT form.
If you don't live closest, consider your closest school first (neighbourhood protocol). However, if you would still like to attend CNPS, you can collect an APPLICATION form.
We collect our Enrolments first, then offer places to the Application form families. In most cases, we can accommodate the applications as well, however we just need to follow the enrolment protocols of the Department of Education.
GRADE 3 CAMP NEXT WEEK
All the best to those attending the Grade 3 camp to Lady Northcote next week! Thank you to Sally for all her work in organising, and to Hannah C and the parents who will be supporting her. We look forward to hearing all about the adventures!
Enjoy a gorgeous photo below of Harvey, Vallie and Roan, proudly sharing that our Preps are now writing SENTENCES! So impressive. Well done Preps, and their amazing teachers!
Have a great weekend,
Sam
Carly McGinniskin - an article by Lucy H
Carly has been an amazing P.E teacher at our school for a long time, now she co-teaches 5/6BC.
When she was younger, she wished to become an Olympic champion in running just like her childhood idol Cathy Freeman. She grew up with three sisters, now has three children of her own. She has travelled to many different places but two of her favourites are Esperance, WA and Uluru, NT. She still longs to go explore theme parks in Florida [USA] and Christmas villages in Finland.
Some of Carly’s hobbies are gardening and hockey as well as coaching hockey; but it isn’t always good. One of her worst injuries comes from hockey; a hockey stick lifted and hit her in the nose, resulting in it breaking. One of her favourite foods is chocolate cake.
Carly attended Deakin University at the Burwood campus where she studied sports science. She became a sports coach but later realised that she didn’t just want to coach sports on the weekends, so she became a teacher; she studied at RMIT. Carly has now been a teacher for 25 years.
PLEASE COME TO OUR BUSH DANCE!
Hello from the Preps!
In Literacy this week, we met two more of Milo’s friends: Jack Jellyfish and Zoe Zebra. We were proud this week to write our own sentence INDEPENDENTLY. It was fantastic to see everyone being brave and having a go writing. Every day we continue to practise writing our letters, words and everything we need in our sentences. In Maths we have continued learning our pairs that add up to 10. We created Friendly Butterflies, with each butterfly showing a pair to ten with dots on their wings. For our Big Question, we have been learning about ways to keep ourselves happy and healthy including the importance of washing our hands and exercising. For our STEAM challenge this week, we worked in pairs to build the best house after reading ‘The Three Little Pigs’. We even tested out whether the wolf (a hair dryer) could blow them down or could they stay standing for 10 seconds! A highlight of our week was our first school photos on Wednesday. It was fun to be a part of the whole school photo, class photo and have our own photos taken.
Thank you to families who attended our Parent-Teacher Interviews and took the time to discuss your child’s achievements. If you were unable to attend your interview, please reach out to us to arrange a suitable time.
Next week in Literacy, we’ll meet two more characters. It’s hard to believe that there are only 4 more characters to go. In Maths, we’ll focus on doubling and halving numbers to five through maths games and activities. We will continue participating in PMP activities and a new STEAM challenge.
We hope you enjoy celebrating Mother’s Day this weekend and enjoy the special gift we made!
From Lauren and Nicole
Hello from the Golden Wattle building!
This week, we have finished up our inquiry into "What makes us happy and healthy?". We focused on physical health and how important exercise is for our bodies and minds. There was lots of fun and laughter with the STEAM Challenge this week, as students worked in small groups to design a game that promotes health and happiness. Students then needed to use everything they had learned throughout our inquiry to plan a ‘FUNtastic’ day for a friend, thinking about the categories: food, sleep, people, animals, physical exercise and fun!
In Literacy, we have been continuing to expand simple sentences by including adverbs in our sentences to describe HOW an action is being done. We’ve enjoyed sharing the stories ‘Oh the things you can do that are good for you’, ‘Today I will Fly’ and ‘The Couch Potato’.
In Maths, we have been measuring the length of objects. We have done this by comparing the length of different items to see which is longer/shorter and using materials such as blocks, icy pole sticks and rulers to measure items.
In Wellbeing, we have focused on knowing and showing respect. We discussed and acted out scenarios where people are showing respect and where people are being rude. We also drew a picture showing respect in action.
Next week, we will begin our new Big Question, "What do we know about where we live?". Hopefully, you have seen the note that went home about an upcoming excursion to Buda House. It would be wonderful if the permission slip could be returned as soon as possible.
In Literacy, we will continue to expand simple sentences with a focus on adjectives, while in Maths, we will continue measuring length. Our Wellbeing focus will be on positive coping strategies.
We hope you have a lovely weekend,
Wendy, Laura, Claire, Sarah and Andrew
Hello from the 3/4 team!
Thank you to those families that have attended our Parent/Teacher interviews this week. We really value the time to discuss your child’s learning and ways that we can continue to support them in our classrooms.
This week, students have enjoyed the 'Going Further' stage of our big question, "How are we connected to living things?" by researching a living thing of their choice. Students have transferred their Information Report writing knowledge and skills by creating an informative poster of an animal of their choice. When these have been completed students will present their new learning to their classmates and they will be displayed as a Poster Gallery in our classrooms for families to come and see before or after school. Keep your eyes out for more information on this later!
In Maths, students have been exploring fractions and have completed some fun and engaging activities, such as designing a flag that is ½ red, ¼ blue and ¼ yellow. We built on this knowledge by using coloured strips of paper to create linear models of fractions.
As part of our Wellbeing program, we continued Topic 2, 'Personal and Cultural Strengths' from the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships program. Students worked in small groups to be ‘Respect Advisors’ by responding to a scenario. As ‘respect advisors’, they needed to think carefully about their scenario, then work together to provide some advice to students about how to show respect in a particular situation, like when they’re on the play equipment, playing a game, or eating with their family.
We also had a great time at the District Cross Country event. Students competed against students from other schools around the district and we were impressed with how students tried their best and persevered. Congratulations to all that attended. Thank you to Carly for her organisation of this event and thanks to the parents who volunteered to assist us on the day.
Next week we will launch our new big question for this term, "What makes us happy and healthy?". There will be lots of excitement as the Grade Three students participate in the Lady Northcote Camp on Wednesday. We know they will have a wonderful experience as they develop their independence, strengthen their friendships as well as displaying our school values of Courage, Thoughtfulness, Passion and Wonder. For the Grade Four students, it will be business as usual! Grade Four students will be investigating fractions in Maths and will begin exploring our big question "What makes us happy and healthy?" throughout our literacy sessions.
Have a great weekend!
Sally, Hannah, Louise and Mr Scott
In Literacy, we have continued to read about various ways to be happy and healthy, focusing this week on exercise and meditation. We have been looking at persuasive devices used in advertising and constructed our own advertisements that are designed to persuade people to become more active. See below for some examples. As we are wrapping up this Big Question this week, our final task was to create our own personal ‘recipe’ for happiness and healthiness. Our word study focus has been on the Greek “ch” making the ‘k’ sound, in words such as ‘scheme’, ‘school’ and ‘mechanic’.
In Maths, we have turned our attention to Fractions and have been learning about mixed numerals (e.g. 1 ¾ ) and improper fractions (e.g. 7/4) . This has allowed us to practice our developing knowledge of multiplication and division.
In wellbeing this week, we have continued to investigate our personal and cultural strengths and how these strengths can be applied to a variety of scenarios. These strengths include hope and optimism, humour, determination, inclusiveness, compassion, honesty, creativity and loyalty, to name just a few.
Cross Country was a success with so many students turning up and trying their best. Thanks to Carly for organising a big day out!
School Sponsorships
World Vision
For many years, our school has sponsored Maria and her community in the East Sumba region in Indonesia through World Vision. The money that we raise through our Indonesian day goes towards this annual sponsorship. Here is a recent update of our sponsor child, Maria. She is now 14 years old, in good health and enjoying learning English. She lives with her parents and brother and enjoys playing badminton. Students from Grades 3-6 have recently been learning about our sponsorships in class and several Grade 6 students have been busy during their lunchtimes writing a letter to Maria. We are looking forward to posting this very soon.
The Orangutan Project
We have also been tuning into our Orangutan sponsorship this week and have received some great news hot off the press. One of the Orangutans we sponsor, Popi, has been just moved to a new site, the pre-release island. This special environment gives Popi the perfect opportunity to fine-tune the skills she’ll need to survive in the wild: foraging for food, climbing high into the canopy, building nests, and gaining the strength and confidence she’ll need for her eventual return to true forest freedom.
The move went smoothly, and Popi and her friend Devi quickly made themselves at home. The island is bursting with fruiting trees, and the girls were thrilled to explore and feast. True to form, Devi led the way with confidence, and Popi happily followed, taking it all in and adapting beautifully to her new surroundings. This is fantastic news for these critically endangered mammals. If you are interested in finding out more then head to the website for further information and updates.
Here are some Grade 3/4 artworks inspired by our recent learning:
Division Cross Country Gr 3-6
Some students have received an invite to the Division Cross Country on Friday 16th May following their District Cross Country run today. Your child will hopefully have also brought home a permission note. This event is not compulsory to attend, but rather an opportunity. Please let Carly know on carly.mcginniskin@education.vic.gov.au if your child does NOT want to attend, so we can organise our school transport and staff supervision around our numbers. We will require the assistance of parents/carers to help supervise our students and act as marshals, recording or finish line officials. This is a very short turnaround, please return your permission note by Wednesday 14th May.
Approximate Schedule
10:30 12+ Boys / Mixed
11:00 12+ Girls
11:30 11 Boys / Mixed
12:00 11 Girls
12:30 10 Boys / Mixed
12:45 10 Girls
Please keep in mind that students who place in the top 12 at Division will receive an invitation to the Regional Cross Country on Tuesday 27th May at St. Arnaud.
Bendigo Braves School Cup
Our CNPS team has made it through to the semi-finals after their great performances in shooting, passing, agility and dribbling! The semi-final is on Saturday 24th May during the Bendigo Braves matches. See the gallery for their first round photos.
There’s a buzz of creativity in the Performing Arts room this term.
Last week, the 5/6 students attended The Phee Broadway Theatre to see Castlemaine Secondary College’s performance of Mama Mia. It was great discussing the different aspects of theatre. The students were particularly interested in the technical parts of creating a show such as props, sets, costume and lighting. Being a whole school performance year, it will be great for the 5/6 students to take on some of these extra responsibilities.
The Prep to 2s have been practising creative dance. We have been thinking about how we can use counting to help us dance in unison (at the same time) and canon (one after the other). Prep E students had a lovely time with some imaginative play on Thursday afternoon. There was a lot of fun had creating characters and making up story lines.
The Grade 3/4s have been using natural disasters as a focus of their dance motif. This week we focused on earthquakes and students created a short sequence that showed their story.
The Grade 5/6s are continuing their scripted drama piece. Parents and carers, please have a chat with your child about what they need for their costumes/props. And we would like to invite you in during their class in Week 6 so please look out for your child’s time closer to the date.
Reconciliation week is approaching in Week 6 and I am putting a call out for some props that I would like to use with the students including:
Cotton plant
Feathers (of any description)
Gum nuts
Banksia cones
Stones
Native leaves
leafy branches (perhaps closer to the date)
Thanks,
Nicci
