Main Task:

This week we'll be learning all about Alexander Graham Bell, the amazing inventor of the telephone.

Read pages 4, 5, 6 and 7 from the text, 'Alexander Graham Bell'.

You can read the text on Epic here: https://www.getepic.com/app/read/43895

Using the information you've learnt about Alexander Graham Bell, choose ONE activity to complete:

Choice 1: Quick Questions

1. True or False - Did Alexander Graham Bell always have a middle name?

2. Explain what an ear tube is?

3. In which country was Alexander Graham Bell born and on what date? Bonus - what language do people in this country speak?

4. What was Alexander Graham Bell's nickname?

5. What disability did Alexander Graham Bell's mother have?

6. What occupation did Alexander Graham Bell's father and grandfather have?

7. Infer why you think Alexander Graham Bell may have decided to invent the telephone.

Choice 2: Quote response

Alexander Graham Bell is quoted as saying, "The inventor looks upon the world and is not contented with things as they are. He wants to improve whatever he sees."

What do you think Alexander Graham Bell meant by his quote? Write a paragraph about an invention that has improved your life. Why are you thankful for that invention? How has it made your life better?

Choice 3: Creative story about Alexander Graham Bell

Picture yourself in the time when Alexander Graham Bell first decided to invent the telephone.

Using your 5 senses within your creative story, set the scene for when he first has his 'light bulb' moment to invent the telephone. (5 Senses - sight, feel, taste, smell, hearing)

Your creative story should use some of the important details found within the text about Alexander Graham Bell.

Example: The idea occurred to him over a sweet smelling cup of tea that his mother Eliza, had just poured. Alexander Bell stopped and stared at his beloved mother. Her hair shined like silk and she smelled sweet, like freshly bloomed roses. Alexander adored his mother and was fascinated by how positive she was considering her profound deafness. Eliza had never complained, nor had she wished she was something else. She showed unconditional love and kindness towards her son Alexander and those around her. "There must be a way to improve my mother's hearing", Alexander considered. "The ability to hear is a human right that everyone should have the privilege to experience", he would appeal.

Alexander felt that his mother should have the privilege of hearing the spring birds cheeping in the fields. The winter rains hitting their bedroom window pane or waves crashing at their nearby beach. Most of all, Alexander wanted her to hear the words, 'I love you my dear mother'.

He sat down on his dusty mahogany desk and reached for his sketch pad and a lead pencil and begin to design something to help his mother. His idea became consuming and he couldn’t sleep thinking about how he could perfect it. His first thought was an ear-tube that would increase the sound to Eliza's ears, but over time this invention soon developed into much more.

Choice 4: Video report on Alexander Graham Bell

Imagine you are a reporter sharing all the important information about the inventor Alexander Graham Bell. It should include information about his birth, death, invention, why it was created and how it changed life for people at the time. Be creative! Upload a video report all about Alexander Graham Bell. We can't wait to see what you come up with for this task!

Choice 5: Telephones Now and Then Venn Diagram

Create a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting old and new telephones. How have they changed over time?
