Welcome to Grade 1

Hello and welcome to the Grade 1 Home Learning section.

Below is the outline of what we will be covering this week, as well as a link to the Department of Education's Home Learning Site.

Please don't hesitate to send a Dojo to your child's teacher if you have any questions.

Term 3, Week 5

Reading

Learning Intentions

We are learning to make connections between similar texts and topics.

Success Criteria

  • I can connect what I am reading to my own experiences.

  • I can connect what I am reading to other ideas from a text that I have read.

  • I can connect my ideas from a text to what is happening in the world around me.


Students read their independent text, writing connections in their Reader's Notebook as they read.

Choice tasks after independent reading.

Writing

Monday

Learning Intention: We are learning to write a recount.

Success Criteria: I can follow the structure of a recount.

I can include openers such as First, Next, Then and Finally


Task: Complete a recount of your weekend in Lockdown - make sure you include;

  • Capital letters

  • Full stops

  • Magic words

Learning Intentions

We are learning about persuasive language and point of view.

Success Criteria

  • I can state my opinion or argument.

  • I can develop an opener to persuade readers of my point of view.

  • I can develop reasons to support my opinion.

  • I can develop a strong conclusion

Activities this week

Monday:

  • Choose 4 list words and complete at least 2 activities from the Activity Grid.

Tuesday:

  • Students to brainstorm as many words they can that have the long 'i' sound in their ice cream.

  • We are learning to develop number sense by organising and grouping different quantities of objects.

Success Criteria

  • I can estimate a handful of matchsticks or blocks.

  • I can efficiently count and check my estimation.

  • I can accurately count.

  • I can draw a picture of how I counted.

  • I can discuss what 10 more, 10 less of my number would be.


Learning activities:


Warm up game - Deal 4


Explores: Addition and subtraction facts

No. of Players: 1

Equipment: A deck of cards (Kings, Queens and Jacks removed) and your Homework book.

How to Play: Deal yourself 4 cards. Add the 4 numbers together. Write the matching number sentence in your homework book. Put those cards at the bottom of the deck. Deal yourself 4 new cards. Continue to play for 5 rounds.

Challenge questions:

  • What was your highest answer?

  • What was your lowest answer?

  • What is the difference between your highest and lowest answers?

  • Can you add all of your answers together?


Learning task: Handfuls


Students collect a handful of pasta/lego/teddies/blocks/etc


First, estimate how many they have in their hand.


Next, work out how many you have without counting them one by one.


Students to structure their handful into groups/collections and use their number knowledge to work out how many are there.


Finally, take a photo or have students draw their collection in their book.


Repeat this activity with a different type of object and different sized handful each day!
