Prep Team Report:

Wow, what a big second half of Term 3 we have had in Prep! Prep B and Prep C hosted assembly. We celebrated Science Week by trying to build the tallest tower that can stand by itself. We dressed up as our favourite characters for Book Week and, as part of our Farm unit, we learnt how to follow a procedure to make bread and enjoyed getting to eat it with butter and jam!

In Literacy, we have been learning about digraphs - representing a sound with two letters for example sh, ch, th (voiced and unvoiced), ng and wh. We have learnt that q u represents two separate sounds /k//w/ for example queen. We have also learnt that there are more than one way to spell some sounds for example: the /k/ sound - c, k and ck, the /w/ sound - w and wh.

In English, we have been learning about Farms. We have been learning about the animals and crops that farmers grow and their purpose for e.g. milk, meat, wool and grains. We have learnt how these items get from the farm to the supermarket. We went on our first excursion to Animal Land Children’s Farm where we enjoyed riding a tractor to feed the sheep, alpacas and pigs. We milked a cow and made butter, had pony rides, played farm games and held bunnies and guinea pigs.

In Writing, we have been expanding sentences with 'because' to explain why and 'but' to show contrast. We have been learning to identify different sentence types for example statements and questions and the punctuation used for both.

In Maths, we have continued our learning of the place value of numbers from 0-20. We have learnt about tens and ones, for example 15 is 1 ten and 5 more ones. We have continued learning about addition and subtraction for example doubles to 10, 1+1, 2+2, 3+3 etc. We have learnt how to find the missing number in equations for example 7 + __ = 10. We have been learning how to collect data with tally marks, and how to create and interpret picture graphs.

In Science, we have been learning about weather patterns. We have learnt about heat waves and that the sun is the closest star to earth that provides warmth and light. We have made weather observations by looking at the sun and clouds, precipitation (rain and snow), checking the wind, and observing the temperature and how the air feels. We have used our daily weather observations to find patterns in weather, for example lately we have had lots of cloudy, windy and cool days.

We have some exciting things happening in Term 4! In week 2 we will have a Western Water Incursion. In week 3, we will have a Prep Breakfast. In week 4 is the School Swimming Program and later in the term we will have a Prep Fun Night to celebrate our first year for primary school. Keep an eye out on COMPASS for details about these events.

Year 1/2 Team Report:

I can't believe it's almost the end of term 3 already! What a busy term we've had!

The grade 1 students had a fun night Friday September 2nd, where they ate pizza and ice cream, and played fun games! They enjoyed seeing their friends outside of school hours and went home happy!

The grade 2 students experienced their first school sleepover last Friday night, where they played lots of games, ate pizza, ice cream and popcorn, watched movies and went for a walk around the school in the dark, where the students spotted beautiful 'treasure' around the school! They (and the teachers!) had lots of fun!

All students across Year 1 and 2 have enjoyed learning a variety of knowledge rich topics this term.

The Year 1 students have learned about Three World Religions, Early World Civilizations and Animal and Plant Survival, while in Maths they've continued expanding their number skills, and learned about fractions.

The Year 2 students have learned about Civil Rights Leaders, Ancient China, and Electricity and Magnetism. In Maths, they've continued expanding their multiplication skills, and learned about location and fractions.

This term, we have enjoyed dressing up for book week, and the Year 1/2 teachers, as well as the Prep teachers, including Mr. B and Dannielle, had fun dressing up as Snow White, the Seven Dwarves, and the Evil Witch! We're also looking forward to Footy Colours Day this week.

We as a team would like to say thank you to all families for your support throughout the term. We hope you all have a safe and fun holiday, and we'll see you all in term 4!

Year 3/4 Team Report:

It’s hard to believe we have reached the end of another term, and what an amazing term it has been.

The grade 3/4 students were ecstatic to be able to attend such a fabulous camp at Golden Valleys in Flinders. Students and staff enjoyed a range of activities, the most challenging being the flying fox, giant swing, and the leap of faith. It was so fantastic to see how many students pushed themselves to try new things and also how well the students supported each other through a range of situations such as attempting a new activity or even just their first night away from family.

This term was filled with lots of knew knowledge. We completed our Middles Ages and Weather and Climate units and are now finishing out our units on the Body Systems and the Processes that Shape Earth. We hope that your children have been coming home and sharing their knew knowledge with you all.

Book Week was a great day, and it was lovely to see so many students dress up and discuss their favourite books and characters.

We hope that you all have a safe and happy holiday, and we can’t wait to see what everyone can achieve in Term 4.

Year 5/6 Team Report:

Wow, what a wonderful second half of term our 5/6s have had - both in and out of the classroom!

In Literacy we have continued to learn about different prefixes and how they change the meaning of a word eg tie and untie, like and dislike, do and redo. Students have also been learning to identify when letter combinations are and are not a prefix eg the un- is a prefix in unskilled, but not in uncle.

In Reading, students have been learning about some significant figures in the fight for social justice and equal rights during the mid-1800s to early 1900s. They have discussed and responded to questions about social reform issues, including the fight for equal rights for African Americans and the Women’s Suffrage Movement. Students have been linking their learning to writing persuasive paragraphs about 21st century topics such as the need to ban single use plastic and the benefits of children playing sports.

In Maths, students have extended their knowledge and skills for finding length and perimeter to finding the area of squares and rectangles, including composite shapes. Automatic recall of their multiplication facts is an ongoing focus too. In Science, we have conducted a number of experiments to demonstrate physical changes and chemical changes as part of our ‘investigating matter’ unit. Students particularly enjoyed the “lava lamp” experiment!

This term we also enjoyed our Golden Valleys camp. Day one of camp saw us arrive to a true camp experience of no power and nonstop rain and although the weather was against us, we overcame all obstacles with a positive attitude and had a great time participating in some indoor team building activities, including a Lego master build challenge! Thankfully power was restored later that night and we went on to enjoy the rest of our camp. Students participated in lots of challenging activities including the giant swing, the flying fox, archery, the obstacle course and the leap of faith. We were so proud of all our students as they demonstrated bravery, teamwork and resilience throughout camp.

Not to miss an opportunity to dress up we finished our camp week off with our Book Week dress up day. We think we all look pretty good in our costumes. What do you think?

Have a wonderful holiday break and we look forward to seeing everyone back rested and ready for the start of Term 4!

STEM Report:

Preps have been learning investigating the world of botany this term. They learnt about how plants grow, as well how we use different plants to better our lives. We also use the botany theme to research patterns and different statistics.

Grade 1 students completed the Magnificent Vehicle unit in STEM this term. They began the term with the driving question: “How can a most magnificent vehicle carry a thank-you message to someone special?” During the term they investigated different engineering techniques and designed several magnificent vehicles. They made these vehicles out of Lego bricks, then wrote their thank-you letters.

Grade 2 students have completed a physics unit focusing on the different states of matter. They researched how something can be classified as a certain state, as well as how they can be altered into different states. They made Oobleck when investigating how a substance can move between states of matter when force is applied. It was very messy!

Grade 3/4 students worked on the Frictionless Ferraris unit. We researched friction and how different substances can increase of decrease this contact force. To demonstrate this, we build hovercrafts out of old CDs, pop top lids, and balloons. Students were able to show me how the balloon’s air flow decreases the friction between the table and the CD. They then worked in teams to build a car out of recyclable materials to be raced down a ramp. At the beginning of next term, we will be racing them to crown the fastest cars. They safely used the hot glues by adhering to the set expectations.

Grade 5/6 students completed a digital technologies unit using Minecraft Education this term. We began by investigating area, and how to calculate it using grids. We researched simple and compound shapes, as well as practiced using mental rotation to alter the orientation of images. They then designed a theme park on a large grid in teams. The grid contained over 10,000 squares! They used these squares to calculate the area of each element. They were then able to construct their theme park in Minecraft Education.

The robotics teams have finished building their robots, however due to some technical difficulties involving the batteries, not all are operational. They have recently learnt how to connect their iPads to the robots and have been practicing maneuvering them around the course. They will begin a range of coding challenges next term.

The solar teams have finished constructing their solar vehicles. They are beginning to make their poster and test their vehicles under different conditions. Race day is set for October 16th, and is now officially an international event, with two Taiwanese teams coming to compete. These teams will be making history by being the first Eynesbury Primary School students to compete at an international level, we couldn’t be prouder!

Performing Arts Report:

What’s been happening in Performing Arts this term?

Students in Prep have begun working on performing in front of a group. They have used puppets to help them retell a familiar story, such as The Three Billy Goats Gruff or The Three Little Pigs. Students have learnt about being a good audience member and are beginning to give each other constructive feedback.

Students in Years 1 & 2 have continued to work on speaking clearly in front of an audience and projecting their voice. They have rehearsed a play with a small group and have been perfecting their character voices and movements so that they can perform their play in front of an audience.

Students in Year 3-4 have been working on their stagecraft skills, such as always facing the audience, whilst rehearsing a scripted play. They have worked on giving each other constructive criticism and supported each other when performing their plays in front of the Year 3-4 co-hort.

Students in Year 5-6 have written, performed in and edited a short movie based on a familiar fairy tale with a twist. They have used the dramatic skills worked on in past years to create a character and have adapted spaces in our school ground for the scenery.

PE Report:

Students have had an energetic second half to the term including many sporting events for the upper year levels.

Throughout this term students in Prep – Year 2 have been focusing on their kicking skills and further developing their fundamental motor skills. This saw the students participate in a variety of game sense activities that involved both soccer kicking and AFL kicking with an emphasis on the different techniques used.

The main focus for our students year 3/4 has been on tee-ball, which has allowed them to further develop their two-hand strike skills and learn a sport they may have been unfamiliar with. Within Year 5/6 students have been learning about basketball and AFL and in particular mastering their throwing and kicking skills.

During this term the district held its athletics carnival which saw students who progressed to this stage compete against various schools in our district. All students that participated on the day should be proud of their achievements. The 5/6 girls’ and boys’ basketball teams also participated in a round robin competition against schools in our district this term and showed exceptional team work skills on the day.
