Introduction
By the end of the lesson you will:
Choose and develop a research question
Begin preliminary research on your selected research area
Begin drafting a method and a results table (containing quantitative and qualitative data) based on your chosen research question
You are going to choose a research question
Design an investigation to collect experimental data on your research question
Collect data (both research and your own experimental data)
Collate your research and data into a scientific poster where you will draw conclusions and present your findings.
You will record all of your research and planning in your logbook (this can be electronic and placed in after)
Learning Tasks
By the end of the SAC you need to have selected and developed a scientific poster on a research question, here are some examples below
Questions:
What effect does soil salinity have on the growth of seedling plants?
Doe particular plants repel insects such as cockroaches, flies, ants or beetles?
Are the cell walls of evergreen native plants different from the cell walls of deciduous exotic plants?
Is a change in temperature related to deciduous leaves changing colour?
Do grasses have different types of cell walls to leaves from trees?
Do grasses have different bundles of vascular tissue compared with leave from trees?
Are the leaf stomata of plants in a different environments the same?
Are the seed from indigenous plants more resistant to fire than the seeds from introduced plant species?
Are the seeds from introduced species more resistant to frost than the seeds from the indigenous plant species?
Do young leaves have the same density and distribution of stomata as older leaves?
How does light intensity/temperature/air movement or humidity affect the transpiration rate of vascular plants?
Does the position of a leaf on a tree determine the number of stomata/the distribution of chlorophyll?
You will need to complete some preliminary research to gain a general understanding of the content and concepts of your selected question.
You will need to design a method to collect data on your research question. You will need to create a clear materials list and method that will allow you to gain meaningful qualitative and quantitative data.
