Working collaboratively (groups of 4), you will explore the problems that arrise from hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism.
In the still of a night, a citizen, wearing suspicious clothes, invaded the building of the secret Institute of Biomedical Sciences of the Daimo. Weeks later, some animals of the rat vivarium underwent changes in behavior and, particularly, in some morphological, physiological, and biochemical parameters. Some witnesses affirmed that they saw the mysterious citizen injecting substances in those rats. The data collected by scientific police accused three different substances: one that does not modify, one that increases, and another one that decreases the plasma thyroid hormone concentration. Students of the local high school Daimo Gully College commit themselves to solve the case. They started working to identify into which rats (rats 1, 2, or 3) the respective substances had been injected.
Using information from chapter 5E:
Identify the hormones of the thyroid gland and their target organ and purpose
Using the information from the previous question, identify the symptoms that would occur as a results of overactivity of the thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism) and the symptoms that would occur as a result of underactivity (hypothyroidism)
Copy the table below into your logbooks. The '?' denote information that is unknown to you, leave those cells of your table blank. Fill in the rest of the table using the information in this document.
Using the information from the table identify which of the rats is suffering from hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism and euthyroidism.
Research the causes of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism that are caused by thyroid malfunction
Using the stimulus - response pathway below, identify the step at which the malfunction is occurring and explain what happens as a result
QUESTIONS
How do malfunctions in thyroid hormone production impact other bodily functions beyond metabolism?
Are there specific lifestyle factors or environmental triggers that can exacerbate thyroid hormone malfunctions?
What are the long-term implications of untreated thyroid hormone imbalances on overall health and well-being?
