Drama: Performance Making
Duration One Semester
Brief Description
In this subject, you will be given diverse options at engaging with performance making and encouraged to specialise in several fields, whether it be acting, directing, costuming, set design, makeup design and application, lighting or sound. You will also go on excursions to the city to see live theatrical performances. You will work as a production team to explore the use of acting and directing techniques, theatrical technologies and performance styles to create some pieces of live theatre. You will be introduced to different styles of drama, such as Epic Theatre and Drama of the Absurd, that will guide your play making process. Students who choose this subject should place Year 9 Offstage Drama as their back up preference in the event that this subject does not run you will still be given opportunities to develop your drama skills.

Music
Duration One Semester
Brief Description
In Year 9 Music, students will choose a focus area in either Performing, Sound Production & Recording, Research or Creating (i.e. learning to play a song or creating your own). This is an elective for any student who enjoys Music and wants to increase their knowledge and skills in creative music making, performing or general appreciation and skills and playing various classroom instruments. Students will learn through a variety of engaging activities such as Songwriting, listening tasks, song analysis, performance skills, music technology use, Audio Recording and Studio, rehearsing skills and practical skills playing on class instruments. No prior skills or learning an instrument is required to study year 9 music, although students who learn or play an instrument are encouraged to choose this subject. Students will be given opportunities to partake in school excursions or participate in workshops.

Drama: Off Stage
Duration One Semester
Brief Description:
This unit focuses on how the off stage elements of theatrical performances are crucial in the development of live theatre. These include set design & rigging, scenery construction, sound design & effects, costume design & making, directing, make-up design & application, choreography and stage management. All stages of the design and construction brief must be planned and recorded in Drama Journal. Drama Off Stage classes will be given the option to create a class devised piece of live theatre if they decide to do so. You will also go on excursions to the city to see live theatrical performances.

Presentation of Set Design Folio/Folder which contain must a set amount of pieces showing a clear progression in skills and understanding of process.

Art
Duration One Semester
Brief Description
In year 9 students experience art making through a variety of art forms. These may include painting, drawing, sculpture, mixed media and printmaking. Students explore a range of art styles and movements to develop their own ideas and experiment with materials and techniques in their visual arts journals. They go on excursions to art galleries to explore artworks from different historical and cultural contexts, including artworks by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.

Media
Duration One Semester
Brief Description
Media is a fun and creative elective, ideal for artists, actors, anime enthusiasts, technology fans or anyone who wants to become a video creator. Students will experience film creation in a variety of formats such as stop-motion animation and live action film. Students will gain experience in the use of media equipment and software such as video cameras and video editing software. Students will have the opportunity to form production teams for the semester and collaborate on film projects together. Upon completion of this elective, students will have developed video production and editing skills that can lead to further media-based subjects.

Visual Communication Design
Duration One Semester
Brief Description
In year 9 students explore and develop practical skills used in a range of design fields. These may include architectural design, interior design, graphic design, and product design. Students explore a range of design styles and movements to develop their own ideas and experiment with manual and digital methods to develop a design folio. Students go on excursions to galleries in the city to examine design works and styles from different historical and cultural contexts, including designs from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander designers.
