Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,
Welcome to the Junior School at Wellington Secondary College. We offer a broad and comprehensive curriculum at Years 7 and 8 based on the Victorian Curriculum. Learning at Years 7 and 8 focuses on a wide range of core subjects including English and English as an Additional Language, Humanities, Mathematics, Science, The Arts, Health & Physical Education, Technologies and Languages. On enrolment, students are able to select either French or Chinese as their language choice.
The Junior Sub-school offers teaching and learning spaces that provide opportunities for students to learn both independently and collaboratively. We acknowledge the importance of meeting the learning needs for all of our students as individuals. Our curriculum caters for students who require support as well as offering greater challenge to those students who are ready to expand their knowledge and skills.
The access to technology through our 1:1 device program exemplifies our commitment to authentically incorporate digital technologies to best prepare students to be skilled and adaptive in their future. Devices are regularly used in the learning spaces, providing greater scope for self-directed learning, access to rich resources and opportunities for collaboration. Additionally, students study an entire year of Digital Technology at Year 7, and one semester at Year 8.
In supporting the transition process into secondary school, we foster a strong sense of belonging at Wellington Secondary College particularly for Year 7 students through our Wellington Welcomes You program and the Design Challenge Program. At Year 8, students are encouraged to consider their leadership potential. The extensive extra-curricular program ensures that each student’s academic, social and emotional development is nurtured in a positive and safe environment. Highlights of our extra-curricular program include:
Home Group Program
Wellbeing Program
Design Challenge Program at Year 7
Lunchtime Engagement Activities Program
Wellington Secondary College offers a Select Entry High Flyers class at Years 7 to 9. This program offers the opportunity for students to be part of a learning group that focuses on the development of higher order thinking skills including a deeper exploration of ideas and concepts, knowledge transfer and application, creative and critical thinking, and open-ended problem-solving. Students in this program are expected to participate in a range of subject competitions and learn a musical instrument in Year 7.
We hope that your child enjoys their time at Wellington Secondary College. As members of the Junior Sub-School they will have opportunities to develop a greater understanding of their strengths, learn to be prepared to face challenges with a growth mindset, feel confident with who they are and look forward to new opportunities.
