Students clean up ready for Harmony Day.
We recently had the opportunity to interview Miss Flint , who facilitates and leads the Student Representative Council (SRC) at Putney Public School. We asked Miss Flint about some of the recent activities that the SRC has been involved in during Term 1, 2025.
The first event was School Clean Up Day. This day was run in conjunction with Clean Up Australia Day. It was a great opportunity to get rid of all the rubbish that was lying around our school grounds. Unfortunately, there were a lot of cans, chip bags, soft plastic and rotting food lying around. It was disappointing to see our school littered with rubbish. Miss Flint said " we should be looking after our playground everyday and keeping it clean not just on Clean Up Day." Let's hope all of our students continue to look after our exceptional school and keep finding ways to preserve our environment.
The next special event was Harmony Day. This day is celebrated annually on March 21st in Australia. It is a national day to celebrate Australia's cultural diversity and promote inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians. The motto for Harmony Day is "Everyone Belongs". At Putney Public school we have students from all different backgrounds and we are a very inclusive and multicultural school.
Harmony Day was celebrated by all students creating an artwork of a flag that represented their cultural background. Max from Orcas class is "pretty much all Australian" while Peter from Dolphins class has an "Irish" background. These many different cultures were represented and shown on the students personal flag.
Harmony Day was fantastic! Students worked really hard on their traditional flag artwork and were proud to talk about their unique backgrounds. Principal of Putney Public School, Mrs Brooks, said that "we were going to be different this year and not dress up in traditional dresses and outfits but celebrate harmony by making a flag of our multicultural society". Miss Flint and the SRC are currently working on ideas for the flags and how to display them in our beautiful school.
The SRC provides a very important role in our school, meeting every week and coming up with new ideas and ways to make students feel represented and given a voice, but most importantly the SRC wants to make our school a fun place for students to come everyday.
