[MUSIC PLAYING] JULIA BRENNAN: Part three of the resource is really about linking emotion that is depicted through artworks with emotion that is shown through music. So the idea here is that you show the students the artworks that are linked in the resource-- do it without telling them the names of the artworks. Get them to describe the emotions of the subjects of the artwork.
Listen to the pieces of music. Describe how they would make you feel and how the students feel when they're listening to them. It's really important when the students are listening to these pieces of music, that they're not distracted. Don't have this as background music while they're doing something else. Even if it's just a 30 second to a minute grab that you're listening to, it's really important they're focusing on listening to the music so that you can have a really good focused discussion about that listening afterwards.
The next step in the process is for the students to create their own portraits and using portraiture to show emotion and expression in the subject. Now, they can either be doing a portrait of themselves, or someone who is important in their lives, or even a friend. And they're really depicting that emotion through there. Now, it can be a realistic portrait or it can be abstract. It's up to you and your students to make that decision. There's lots of flexibility.
