Davis and Hines

>> Back to video

[MUSIC PLAYING] JULIA BRENNAN: In our second excerpt, you'll see an artwork by American painter, Stuart Davis, matched with the music of Earl Hines. Now, Earl Hines was also inspired by, Fats Waller. And it was all around that sort of time when we saw the prominence of jazz music.

So you'll notice in the artwork that there's allusions to jazz, where we've got this sort of syncopated or offbeat feel. So syncopation is where the sound comes off the beat. So for example, if your beats like this, your syncopation would be-- boom, boom, boom, boom.

And you can recognize that in the artwork, if you look really clearly. It's also got lots of bright colors and overlapping of layers and things like that. Very reminiscent of what you might hear and expect from jazz music.
