You will:

  • explore rhythms using body percussion

  • experiment with Chrome Music Lab Rhythm

  • create rhythms using Chrome Music Lab

  • learn the concept of rhythm, beat and metre.

Before you begin

In this creative class we will be exploring the concepts of rhythm and metre.

  • Rhythm in music is the placement of sounds in time.

  • Beat is the regular pulse in music.

  • Metre is the basic rhythmic pattern of beats - the number of beats in a group.

You will need:

  • lots of concentration

  • access to a device to display class.

Chrome Music Lab Rhythm instructions

Chrome Music Lab Rhythm is an interactive resource designed to experiment with the beats and rhythms.

  • Chrome Music Lab requires the use of the Google Chrome browser. It will not work effectively when using Internet Explorer or Firefox.

  • Chrome Music Lab Rhythm automatically opens in the 3 beat metre option.

  • There are 4 options to explore: 3 metre, 4 metre, 5 metre and 6 metre.

  • In this Creative Class we will be starting on the 4 beat metre page as this is the easiest rhythm.

  • A rhythm pattern is automatically generated - click play to hear the rhythm pattern and see the animated characters play the rhythm.

  • To delete the rhythm click on the rhythm icons in the grid.

  • To add sounds click on the grid as required.

  • Switch to each new metre by clicking the right or left arrow

  • Each metre uses different instruments.

Please note: this creative class will concentrate on 3 beat and 4 beat metre rhythms.

You may choose to explore 5 beat metre and 6 beat metre as further extension activities.
