In this lesson sequence, students will investigate spatial differences in wellbeing across Sydney and NSW. During these lessons, students will explore census data on factors like income and education, explore whether a ‘latte line’ exists in Sydney. They will finish by writing a response evaluating the degree on spatial inequality in NSW.
Students:
Learning intention – to understand what is meant by spatial inequality; to understand the spatial variations across Sydney and NSW; to understand the reasons for spatial variations in wellbeing.
Success criteria – students will be able to use data and their understanding of the spatial variations in NSW to evaluate whether NSW is a ‘vastly unequal place.’
Content:
Students:
investigate the reasons for and consequences of spatial variations in human wellbeing in Australia, for example:
identification of differences in human wellbeing in Australia using a range of indicators GS
examination of reasons for and consequences of differences in human wellbeing for TWO groups of people in Australia eg cultural groups, unemployed, the aged, young people, people with disabilities VR
analysis of how human wellbeing is influenced by where people live in Australia M
Outcomes:
GE5-6 analyses differences in human wellbeing and ways to improve human wellbeing
GE5-7 acquires and processes geographical information by selecting and using appropriate and relevant geographical tools for inquiry
In this lesson, students will construct photo sketches of Mosman and Penrith and use these to make observations about differences in lifestyle and wellbeing that may exist between the spaces.

In this lesson, students will use Census quick data to investigate spatial variations between 2 different suburbs of Sydney. Students will explore data on factors like income, house size and education levels for Mosman and Penrith. By the end of the lesson, students will evaluate the validity of the claim that there is a ‘latte line’ in Sydney.

In this lesson, students will explore the reasons for spatial variations across Sydney. Factors considered will include average age of the population and country of birth. For example, in some parts of Sydney it may be that many in the population have English as a second language or less education and this may impact on wellbeing indicators such as income. A comparison will then be made with a NSW regional town before students evaluate whether NSW is a place of spatial equality.
