Watch the video for an introduction to the lesson.
Watch the videos to learn how to add (-5) + (-3) and (-5) - (-3).
All together we have eight, -1 counters, so (-5) + (-3) = (-8)
Complete this task in your exercise book, making sure you either draw counters to help you or use the algebra tiles website.
Represent these questions with counters before writing your final answer.
7 + 2
4 – 2
0 + 4
0 + (−3)
(−4) + 0
(−1) + (−3)
(−7) – (−2)
(−4) + (−2)
(−2) + (−3) + (−1)
(−1) + (−4) – (−3)
What do you notice? What do you wonder?
Consider a tug of war with two people. You tie a flag in the middle of a long rope and each person stands 1 metre from the flag but on opposite sides. If you are both roughly the same size and weight, who do you think will win? Nobody, your efforts will cancel each other out and you will go nowhere!
The same is true with our counters. If we have a +1 counter and a -1 counter, they will cancel each other out and make zero.
Example 1: Consider 5 + (-3)
The +1 and -1 pairs will cancel each other out, leaving us with two +1 counters.
So 5 + (−3) = 2
Example 2: What about 3 + (-5)?
Again, our +1 and -1 pairs will cancel each other out, leaving us with two -1 counters.
So 3 + (−5) = −2
Complete this task in your exercise book, making sure you either draw counters to help you or use the algebra tiles website.
Represent each of the following using counters and then write their total as a single number.
(−3) + 1
(−2) + 2
(−4) + 2
(−5) + 4
3 + (−2)
6 + (−2)
3 + (−3)
4 + (−3)

Play Integer wars with a friend or family member.
You will need:
deck of cards
pencil and paper
Using the Ace (one) to ten cards from a standard deck of cards, each player takes turns to draw two cards from the deck.
Red cards are negative and black cards are positive.
Add the two cards together.
The player who has the largest total wins a point.
Play until someone reaches a score of 10.
Use The Mathenæum website to practise adding with negative numbers.
Instead of Integer wars, you can play the Tug of War game using the template button.
Try creating your own questions with larger numbers or using fractions and decimals in any of the activities above.
Complete the negative number addition Venn worksheet by creating a copy for yourself using the template.
Don't forget to hand in the work you completed today!
Your teacher will have told you to do one of the following:
Upload any digital documents you created and any photos you took of your written work to your Learning Management system (MS Teams, Google Classroom for example).
Email any digital documents you created and any photos you took of your written work to your teacher.
Make sure you keep any hand written work you did in your exercise book or folder as your teacher may need to see these when you are back in class.
