Overview

During this learning sequence, students will investigate global shipping patterns and illustrate the interconnections of production and consumption of goods globally. 

During these lessons, students will explore the history of global shipping industry and some current challenges it faces.  

Learning intentions: 

• to identify the rapid historical changes that led to the current day shipping industry 

• to recognise the interconnection of global shipping industry with global trade 

• to understand the challenges confronting the current global shipping industry. 

Success criteria: 

• students can apply examples of global shipping interconnections to their understanding of global trade and sustainability. 

Syllabus content: 

• investigate the ways places and people are interconnected through trade in goods and services across a range of scales, for example: (ACHGK067)  

• Analysis of spatial patterns of global trade eg countries of production and consumption, global shipping and freight routes  

Outcomes:  

• GE4-2 describes processes and influences that form and transform places and environments  

• GE4-3 explains how interactions and connections between people, places and environments result in change  

• GE4-4 examines perspectives of people and organisations on a range of geographical issues  

Students will explore how the global shipping industry has changed the world through a study of the history of container ships.  

Content:

• analysis of spatial patterns of global trade eg countries of production and consumption, global shipping and freight routes. 

Outcomes:  

• GE4-3 explains how interactions and connections between people, places and environments result in change  

Students will explore the interconnection of global shipping containers with people and the environment through a series of case studies that illustrate environmental impacts of container ships.  

Content:

Outcomes:  

• GE4-2 describes processes and influences that form and transform places and environments

Students will learn about the social, economic and environmental interconnections of overfishing on global shipping and subsequent piracy increase by Somali fisherman.  

Content: 

• investigate the ways places and people are interconnected through trade in goods and services across a range of scales, for example: (ACHGK067)  

• Analysis of spatial patterns of global trade eg countries of production and consumption, global shipping and freight routes

• GE4-3 explains how interactions and connections between people, places and environments result in change
