This lesson sequence (lessons 4-6) extends on work students completed in lesson 1-3 about ethical research and using citations. The focus of the next three lessons is using and assessing sources.
Students will:
extend their understanding of ethical research
understand the impact of ethical research on writing with authority
engage in a guided annotation of the text ‘Sources’
use the context of their learning to explore new concepts and vocabulary
use critical thinking skills to extend their understanding of how they can assess the credibility of the source.
These lessons address the following outcomes:
EN4-1A responds to and composes texts for understanding, interpretation, critical analysis, imaginative expression and pleasure
EN4-2A effectively uses a widening range of processes, skills, strategies and knowledge for responding to and composing texts in different media and technologies
EN4-3B uses and describes language forms, features and structures of texts appropriate to a range of purposes, audiences and contexts
Students will continue the focus on developing their capacity to write with authority – ethical research. They will consolidate their understanding of citation and learn new vocabulary relevant to using reliable sources. Students will also consider the role of sources for different professions.
During this lesson students will:
connect prior learning about ethical research to learning about sources
apply vocabulary to the context of their study
make connections between their learning about ethical research and how this is demonstrated in their world.
Outcomes
EN4-2A effectively uses a widening range of processes, skills, strategies and knowledge for responding to and composing texts in different media and technologies
S402UA9: understand and use bibliographies, citations (including web citations) to acknowledge sources and avoid plagiarism
Students will learn about the features of a transcript. Students will then examine the ABC Education resource ‘Sources’ to further enhance their understanding of ethical research and how this will help them to write with authority.
During this lesson students will:
think critically about what defines a reliable and purposeful source
understand the codes and conventions of a transcript
read and understand an appropriated version of the ABC Text ‘Sources’.
Outcomes or content points applicable for the lesson
EN4-1A responds to and composes texts for understanding, interpretation, critical analysis, imaginative expression and pleasure
S401RC06 understand how language is used to evaluate texts and how evaluations about a text can be substantiated by reference to the text and other sources (ACELA1782)
EN4-3B uses and describes language forms, features and structures of texts appropriate to a range of purposes, audiences and contexts
S403RC21 analyse and evaluate the ways that text structures and language features vary according to the purpose of the text and the ways that referenced sources add authority to a text (ACELY1721, ACELY1732)
Students will engage in thinking routines to extend their understanding of the text ‘Sources’. These thinking routines will allow them to understand how a source can be assessed. Students will also use graphic organisers to prepare for a research task.
During this lesson students will:
engage in thinking routines to organise your understanding of the text ‘Sources’
use graphic organisers to brainstorm ideas for a topic of your choice.
