2020 Nanga Mai Awards

Nanga Mai is an Eora (Sydney) word meaning ‘to dream.’

The Nanga Mai Awards ceremony celebrates and recognises Aboriginal students, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal teachers, other departmental staff, Aboriginal community members and schools demonstrating excellence across a diversity of areas.

The 2020 Nanga Mai Awards ceremony will be held on Thursday, 26 March 2020 in the Yallamundi Room, Sydney Opera House.

Nominations will open on Monday, 14 October 2019 for the 2020 Nanga Mai Awards.

About the Awards

The awards are organised by the Aboriginal Education and Communities Directorate within Educational Services, NSW Department of Education.

The Nanga Mai Awards are held in March every year in Sydney. 2020 marks the 14th anniversary of the awards.

Nominations are open to all Department of Education employees. The nominations are reviewed by two panels including School Services area Aboriginal Education Teams and by a state panel consisting of representatives from Aboriginal Education and Communities Directorate, NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group Inc., the Aboriginal Education Council, the NSW Primary Principals' Association and the NSW Secondary Principals' Council.

Previous venues for the awards have included Taronga Zoo, The Powerhouse Museum and the Australian National Maritime Museum.

WHO CAN BE NOMINATED FOR A NANGA MAI AWARD?

Awards will be presented to selected Aboriginal students, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal teachers, other Departmental staff, community members, schools and external organisations working in partnership with schools to improve educational achievements in the area of Aboriginal education and community engagement.

Candidates can be nominated for more than one category - please submit a new form for each category. Nominations should be approximately 300 words.

WHEN DO NOMINATIONS OPEN AND CLOSE?

Nominations open on 14 October 2019 and close on 6 December 2019.

Principals/Supervisors of Nanga Mai Award Winners are notified in Term 1 (February 2020).

WHO CAN NOMINATE?

NSW Department of Education staff including principals, school executive, teachers, school administrative and NSW Department of Education non school based staff and public service employees.

ENDORSEMENT OF NOMINATIONS

Nominations will require endorsement from your School Principal/Supervisor and your Local/Regional Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG) President.

Where endorsement cannot be obtained from the Local AECG President, please contact the NSW AECG Secretariat on 02 9550 5666 for advice.
