Understanding the tasks

Rating the tasks

This lesson contains a few activities. Each activity will have one or more tasks. These tasks have been given a rating.

Some of the tasks in this lesson are must do. These are important to help you understand the introductory ideas or skills.

Have a go at the should do tasks and reach out to your friends or teacher if you need some advice. These will usually take a bit longer to complete than must do tasks.

Could do tasks will probably take you some extra time and might need you to get creative or problem solve. We strongly encourage you to try these.

Activity 1 - Understanding transformations and symmetry

Remember:

In mathematics we define transformations as actions that change a shape using rotation (turns), reflection (flips), translation (slides) or dilation (resize or enlargement).

Task 2 - Exploring transformations Part 1

  1. Explore rotation using the embedded graph.

    • Choose Rotation using the black slider.

    • Use the red slider to rotate the red triangle 360 degrees around the blue triangle.

    • Complete the questions on the Do you understand rotation? page in the interactive underneath the graph.

  2. Explore reflection using the embedded graph.

    • Choose Reflection using the black slider.

    • Move the red dotted line by grabbing and dragging the red dots.

    • Complete the questions on the Do you understand reflection? page in the interactive underneath the graph.

  3. Explore translation using the embedded graph.

    • Choose Translation using the black slider.

    • Use the two red sliders to move the image around.

    • Complete the questions on the Do you understand translation? page in the interactive underneath the graph.

  4. When you have answered all the questions, click the blue arrow in the bottom of the interactive.

  5. Click the button to create a document containing your answers.

  6. Click Export text to download a word document containing your work, which you can then share with your teacher.

Task 3 - Using shapes to create images

Tangram shapes can be used to make a huge variety of characters and objects that you can use in your stop motion.

Complete these puzzles to explore how only 7 different shapes can be used in a wide variety of ways.

Handing in your work

Don't forget to hand in the work you completed today!

  • Your teacher will have told you to do one of the following:

    • Upload any digital documents you created and any photos you took of your written work to your Learning Management system (MS Teams, Google Classroom for example).

    • Email any digital documents you created and any photos you took of your written work to your teacher.

Make sure you keep any handwritten work you did in your exercise book or folder as your teacher may need to see these when you are back in class.
