Understanding the tasks

Rating the tasks

This lesson contains a few activities. Each activity will have one or more tasks. These tasks have been given a rating.

Some of the tasks in this lesson are must do. These are important to help you understand the introductory ideas or skills.

Have a go at the should do tasks and reach out to your friends or teacher if you need some advice. These will usually take a bit longer to complete than must do tasks.

Could do tasks will probably take you some extra time and might need you to get creative or problem solve. We strongly encourage you to try these.

Did you know that in some countries, making eye contact can be seen as rude?

Body language is interpreted through your cultural understanding because different cultures have different 'ways of being'.

  1. Open the Body language around the world Google Slides.

  • Click on the image to open a new tab and view the Google Slides.

  • Click on the Use Template button to create a copy for you to edit.

Activity 1, Task 1

Question 8

Add adverbs to these sentences to show this teenager is tired:

They got out of bed. They ate their breakfast. They packed their bags.

Suggested answer:

They reluctantly got out of bed. They slowly ate their breakfast. They half-heartedly packed their bags.

Question 11

Describe the body language and movement of a frightened person. Use: adverbs, verbs

Suggested answer:

The girl snuck cautiously from the cave she was hiding in. She slowly raised her head above the rock guarding the front entrance. She looked from side to side with wide eyes. Her hands trembled.

Note: Did you have a different answer? As long as you used verbs and adverbs that showed fright, you are probably correct.

Question 12

Write a scene where a character's body language contrasts with their dialogue.

Suggested answer:

How are you feeling about the big game? Jeremiah asked his brother.

Great! He said, We are sure to win, his brother, Harry, replied.

Harry smiled, but Jeremiah noticed that his brother couldn’t stop bouncing up and down and arranging and rearranging his sports bag. He seemed nervous, even if he would never admit it.

Activity 2, Task 1

Slide 3

What does the comparative size of the baby and the setting convey?

Suggested answer:

The small size of the baby in comparison to the setting conveys the baby's vulnerability and weakness.

Slide 5

Describe the positioning of each character. What message does it convey about the relationships between these characters, or what might be going on?

Suggested answer:

The two men are standing close together which suggests they know each other. The girl is standing alone which suggests she is somehow different from the two men. Using their body language, we might assume that the two men are angry with the girl for some reason.

Slide 9

You want to create an image that shows one character has far more power than the other. Describe how you would use comparative size, angle and positioning to create this message.

Suggested answer:

I would make the more powerful character far greater in size than the weak character. The image would be taken from a low angle that looked up at the more powerful character. We would see that the weaker character was also looking upwards towards them. The characters would be close together so that their size difference was more obvious.

Handing in your work

Don't forget to hand in the work you completed today!

  • Your teacher will have told you to do one of the following:

    • Upload any digital documents you created and any photos you took of your written work to your Learning Management system (MS Teams, Google Classroom for example).

    • Email any digital documents you created and any photos you took of your written work to your teacher.

Make sure you keep any handwritten work you did in your exercise book or folder as your teacher may need to see these when you are back in class.
